Diesel storage

I want to add a filter to my diesel tank. Only have room for one filter so it's either a dirt or water filter...which would be the one to install?

I'm thinking of the dirt filter as you can always add additives for water I believe.

Which leads to my next question. What is the best additive out there and what will it do for the diesel in the tank?

Never had a problem with either using 1000l a month.

I'd be filling 1000lts but it will do me for a year or so.

The filter will slow the flow of diesel but does anyone know by how much. my tank is gravity flow

I fitted one of these to our gravity tank 2yrs ago and not observed it to be too dirty yet to need a fresh filter... Prob should real do it now though.
    http://rotech.ie/product/10-micron-groz-filter/

Tank is on a base that is 6ft or so.
Filling cap on both tractors is 5ft or so and the flow is not problematic.
Would use 1200 to 1400 litres a year.

That's the one I was looking at alright. The tank is level with the bonnet of the tractor

Stanadyne is fuel additive we use Reg, do ye have the carry on of winter/summer diesel there ?
Can get problems with some machine 'waxing up' in cold weather on 'summer' diesel here.
Most our fuel comes through a purchasing group from shell they add additive to reduce decay of bio-diesel also.

Hard to tell with some places here if your getting the winter or summer stuff. Does that additive prolong the life of the diesel as I'm lead to believe that most diesel has s shelf life of around 6 months

Ye does increase life of diesel how far couldn't say being honest doesn't hang around long enough to find out :(, put it in more so to keep engines cleaned out as newer models are much more fussy about their grub than likes of the massey which would nearly run with twigs and leaves nd stuff in the tank :D. Well, if the uncles 956 is anything to go by ;)...
One thing i wonder is with this new low sulfur fuel isn't meant to be as lubricating? as older stuff what most machines were built to be lubricated by the fuel? Don't quote me on that but just something more to muddy the water regards fuel pump etc :pac: :o.
    Sorry.

    Sorry.
Your right about the lube. The low sulphur fuel is a problem in itself as it takes the sulphur out of the full lines, pump and seals. Leads to leaks in the older machines

We used to have a special white disposable sock on the
Pipe that went into the milk tank.
Would that work? Or tilt the tank away from the outlet.

Don't think the old school tricks do work with the new diesel and the bacteria growth

You need an in-line fuel filter with a minimum of 30microns.

A 120 litres per minute fuel pump with filter only costs about €500 including auto shutoff.
I use the same additive as Blackgrass because the newer motors are very finicky about their drink.
    Injector pumps are expensive...

Cheers for that dawn. I just want to keep things simple with the one filter on the tank. The filter I was looking at was 10 microns would that do the trick?

Anyone know how badly the gravity flow is affected by the filter

I have a 10 micron filter on my tank. Its gravity feed and it does slow the flow by about 30-40% id say but its still fine. There's a tap on the bottom of the filter to drain off water similar to the old masseys with the glass bowls on the side. Got it from Rotech and the best thing is to talk to them. They are very helpful.

Yeah that's the filter I was looking at. Could live with that reduction in flow.

We have a Baldwin glass bowl filter on the tank here, and I know it's a fair bit of diesel but after 7k litres there's a fair pile of dirt in it, needs a change now anyways.... And that's only the dirt you can see. in modern systems the dirt that will do the damage is te dirt you won't see,
