Intermittent high ping in Counter Strike Global Offensive, Vodafone fiber.

Hi Guys, I have Vodafone broadband and I was having issues with ping in CS:GO so I recently upgraded to their fiber package on Friday and all was well but with intermittent ping issues again. At the moment the ping to the EU West servers tops out at 200ms which is completely unacceptable. Is anyone else having these problems or is it just me on my connection. I'm still on my cooldown period so I can switch to Eircom if the issues are Vodafone side or if the connection to Valves official MM servers from Ireland is just bad I'll stick with them.

The weirdest thing is often times I get better connection to the EU East servers which would make me think it's not actually Vodafone, but at the moment the ping to EU East is just as bad. Sometimes I get 130ms to EU West and at the same time it's about 45 to EU East.

Post a few examples of servers youre connecting to (you can get their IPs from the server browser). Ill see what kind of latency is present on a UPC link for comparison.

I use a tool to pick which servers I want, it's called matchmaker server picker, it's specifically for CS:GO but it gives you the ranges of IP Address of the servers, I picked a random one from the range; 146.66.152.9 - I got 123ms latency on this server. Could you ping that on UPC and see what you get, cheers!

So I tethered my phone to my PC and the ping times were significantly reduced on my 4G network! Time to switch to Eircom methinks! if anyone on Eircom could let me know their ping to CS:GO servers that would be great.

Funny enough I found the same on Vodafone's mobile network, had my mobile tethered to the PC when my Three and WiMax connections both went down, some servers had a lovely 60-70ms ping but the majority of EU servers had 200ms, all the while the ping command I was running to google.ie stayed at a steady 40. I think there's some BS going on in Vodafone's routing to Europe.

Regarding ping on Vodafone vs Eircom fiber, when I lived in Letterkenny a friend of mine was on Vodafone fiber but I was on Eircom fiber, on average to UK BF4 servers I had 10ms less for some reason. Pings to UK were around 20-30ms, Europe were generally 40ms (Netherlands) 50ms (Germany). I used to test a lot on pingtest, the pings dropped 10ms more once vectoring got enabled but I moved out very shortly afterwards so couldn't tell ya how pings to anywhere other than Ireland were.

Interesting, I was thinking it might be a routing issue alright because Battlefield 4 doesn't suffer as much as this. Would you say your ping times were consistent enough even during peak hours? thanks for the reply btw.

Vodafones routing is terrible. Their connection to usa goes to **** in the evenings is one obvious example. Check ping in morning vs evening.

Post an IP address to the server(s) and I'll see what pings I get.

By the way, Eircom are very pricy. Try Sky.

It's funny you mention that, I'm getting EXACTLY the same latency between Ireland and EU West servers and Ireland US East servers in CS GO, that's madness, I'm definitely going to switch to Eircom.

Thanks for doing that, that is acceptable in my books. Also sorry I'm not sure what provider you are with? and is that a wired or wireless connection to your router?

I edited my last post. It's wired. I only use wireless if I can't use a Ethernet.

I just checked my ping there and now it's gone down to what your ping time is, so intermittent there seems to be no reason for it, thanks for doing that btw can I ask do you play CS:GO or any other online shooters and if so do you see any issues with latency as high as mine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭partyboy690

Just checking the pings there now, it's pretty damn good now, looking at 40ms now, I just don't get it, all I want is reliable ping up to 60ms and I would be so damn happy!

Vodafone really is terrible for gaming it seems. My buddies with upc do not experience these swings in latency.

    How would Eircom be?

Don't know tbh, noone uses eircom anymore :D

I can't get UPC where I am unfortunately :( I'm sure Eircom couldn't be worse than this!

    How would Eircom be?

I found pings perfect on both 8Mb ADSL and 50Mb efiber over 2 years between 2011 and 2013, never went up or down. I was on an NGB no-contention connection on ADSL though. Was about 55 quid a month for both connections. Never had any packet loss or anything. I could just have been lucky though man, it is Eircom after all.

EDIT: actually I've heard they may have some issues with their back haul being saturated within the past 4 months due to so many upgrades to efibre saturating it. Dunno what its like at the moment, I'm back at home swapping between 3G and WiMax.

I don't mean to contradict what you guys are saying, but I've found Vodafone fiber superb for ping. Ridiculously good actually. I've better ping times to UK servers than UK people in some cases. Pings in Ireland are also great. Hosting myself on various platforms I've seen lows of 5-7ms to highs of about 15-17ms!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

Well yes, mostly it's fine for me as well. I recently started playing a game that only has US servers, and then I certainly noticed the difference. As mentioned it seems fine in the mornings and terrible in the evenings. Can see the problematic hop on traceroute, it's one of the telia routers.

Exact same circumstances here, Vodafone Fibre, massive ping spikes in the evening, alright most of the day. Probably network congestion.

Incidentally, shooting a Nova at someone then seeing it hit .5 of a second later is oddly satisfying.

    Ok here (UPC).

Most likely youve got a transit chokepoint between Dublin and France.

Next time do a traceroute as it can often be a problem with peering or routing between transit connections in a different country. Several years ago there was a problem with the route from all UPC customers in europe to Valve servers. It probably had nohing to do with Valve or UPC but sometimes these transit operators (between countries for example) will refuse traffic from another operator if they feel that they are not getting a fair deal on the agreements they have.

from 2011 (fixed a long time ago) http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=21172499#post21172499

Next time run a traceroute to one of the servers. I just picked a random german one there:
    https://www.gametracker.com/server_i...141.141:27515/

    so in command prompt type:

    tracert 176.57.141.141

And see where it takes you :)

    Hi

I switched to vodafone home 24Mb BB

To Irish servers my pings are fine so it's not a local issue

Pinging rte.ie [89.207.56.140] with 32 bytes of data:

To any UK servers I'm getting terrible latency

Pinging multiplay.co.uk [85.236.96.26] with 32 bytes of data:

I switched from Eircom to Vodafone in the hope it would be more stable as they run their own network, but it seems to be worse. How frustrating

    Could anyone advise?

Thought they fixed this, haven't noticed it so much these days. Last month was awful for me. Posted this on the Vodafone talk to at the time.

    GreyAlien wrote: »
Ping still deteriorating to servers outside Ireland. Ping to a US east coast server while normally about 109ms, shoots up to almost 300ms between the hours of 19:30 to about 22:30. The same for a UK server, normally a ping of 45ms shoots to 200ms or so.

While it's only for about 3 hours of the day, these would be the times I would usually be gaming. My speeds are fine, get full on that of what my line can handle. The fact it's happening during peak internet hours seems to suggest some kind of congestion issue on Vodafone's backhaul for connections going outside the country. Pings are fine and dandy to Irish servers during the mentioned times.

As of posting this everything is back to normal given what time it is now (23:00). I suspect the same will happen again daily, like it did yesterday.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

Your traceroute shows a possible problem in Cable and wireless and/or Cogent in London. It's like the problem I described above in that the ISP and game server provider are not directly to blame. Obviously your best option is to change ISP but if you can't do that then start gathering evidence and other affected users.

I'd start on the multiplay forums and show them the traceroutes (just hide your own IP this time) explain to others how you generated the traceroutes and try and get more people to back you up and explain how long the problem has been affecting you. Try other game server providers and do the same and of course keep the pressure on vodafone too. It would be interesting to see if all vodafone ireland or even better for you if Vodafone UK users have the same problem. Try valve's official game servers too.

Of course, it could just get fixed in the meantime but who knows? perhaps the providers don't even know that there is a problem.
