Farmers car

Folks looking at changing the car but need to get one suitable for my uses. It needs to able to take me to work as well as carry stuff around for the farm and do some towing too. Jeep or crew cab not really suitable as I don't do enough towing and it would be hard to justify the high fuel use.

Have had a VW caddy for the last few years and it's been great for what I use it for. Not great for towing but I only use a trailer on maybe once or twice a month and at that only with light loads. It's my main mode of transport as I also use it for going to work. OH has a car so we use that for going anywhere or where we need to bring other people.

I have had a few vans now but think it is time go go back to having a car for being able to take passengers as if I do I have to take her car or the parents. Thinking of getting an estate as I want something with plenty of room. I was thinking of getting something like a Rav4 but was suprised by how small the boot is. Also was driving my sister Cmax and though it was great but they have lip on the boot which a pain when trying to lifting things in and out. I used to have a x-trail which was great to drive but I wasn't too happy with the fly by wire trottle and I was very dissapointed with the mpg. Loads of room in it even if the back seats are up but I'm not going to fork out for tax over 2L.

Not a big fan of some of the makes around so going to stick to either ford toyota or VW. So I have been looking at focus mondeo passat and aventis estates. They seem to have plenty of room and comfort. One of my friends was over during Christmas and he has a galaxy and it's huge inside. So might look at one of those.

What do most people have or want to have?

Santa fe might be an option? Avensis and land cruiser here.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

hard to beat the Passat as the farmers car id say. depending what year your getting, get the highest hp 1.9tdi for that year. they would pull anything

ya that engine is a cracker! we've a 04 bora here with it

Iv a passat that gets put across fields, filled with meal, drags trailers and blocks gaps ha she's a real work horse that's very reliable and good on fuel. Hard to beat Vw if you want a car to substitute a jeep.

On the Santa Fe they **** engines after 100,000k and you'll find it hard to get a seckond hand one for less than €2000 in Ireland. Lovely looking jeep and nice to drive but a pile of scrap after that.

Funny how people have different views. A neighbour of mine scraps jeeps for a living and reckons the santa fe are the most trouble free jeep around and go forever

OP said something good on fuel, Forrester is addicted to the stuff. So too are any Hyunday, unless you are buying new.

Go German, with that 1.9tdi which will go forever and is economical.

One thing with the vw is the low alloy sump on my 2nd this year doesn't take much to burst them . Anyone else come across this problem ? Other than that great car

Bought a new Rav4 lately, really nice car, it's a Toyota so if it's as good as all the Toyotas, I won't complain, fuel consumption showing 6.5l/100km, so mightn't suit if you did a lot of driving, huge legroom in the back. I changed rom Peugeot 407 that was doing 55- 60 mpg so I notice the difference already. I get a fair bit of back trouble, the higher car and firmer seats is a gift now

The older ones are great and I have looked at them but same as the rav4 boot is kinda small unless you get the grand and they like like hens teeth. The newer ones are not as good as the 4wd and low range is electric.

Yeah big fan of those VW tdi engines so that was why I thinking of the galaxy, would be looking for the 115 or 130 hp ones as the 90hp would be just a waste of time car too heavy for it.

Had a couple of toyotas before getting vans and hard yo best them. Ol lad had 3 carainas that all clocked over the 200k mark and an aventis that hit 270k. The ones I have been looking are out of my budget or very high mileage or imports.

Avensis diesel. You will pickup pre 2007 up handy enough. Yes road tax is 700/year but they do 50/gallon on diesel are easy to maintain. There are a few station wagons hanging around as well.

I think that car wuld be bough for a nice bit less than that mid teens should get a car of that age with that mileage. If you got 2-3 years out of it it would be ok.

Friend of mine bust 2 sumps in 3 days in a leon, put in 4 or 5 altogether in the time he had it! Never used clutch either, cringe worthy stuff being in the car with him!

Young lad has a diesel IbizaI ans same thing happened. Sump is light aluminium was amazed when motor factors had it in stock and could not get it second hand off a car dismantler. Had to replace engine as it was siezed. He went into a pot hole.

Got ourselves a corolla diesel last year as the family car but I was thinking of getting something a bit bigger for myself like an estate too for having the dogs in and for getting stuff like meal bags or fencing or just taking stuff around. Using the car trailer can be a bit of a pain for getting smallish stuff.

Octavia Scout maybe, every bit as capable as Audi AWD and Subaru Forrester. Hens teeth in Ireland but if you don't mind a flight and a ferry crossing I reckon they can be got handy enough in the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭bogman_bass

The problem with Passats is that lads dont buy them to sit in the drive. They tend to have pretty high miles on them.

Octavia is the same car with a different badge and a lower price tag

Toyota Carina E - lean burn engine - maroon or dark grey colour. Steel wheels with 2 or 3 wheel covers missing. Non colour coded bumpers. I don't think you could qualify for any grants unless you had owned this car.

Or pulled a cowbox with straw sticking out from under the back door, no mudguards and the bottom 3" eaten out the sides from sucky calves piss!!

You also at some stage must have ......

wore wellies that a 2 sizes too big for you. Slipped your feet into dunnes stores plastic bags before donning them.

Substituted baling twine for a belt.

Fingers like teeth of a pin harrow.

Smelt of silage. Cow sh*te ......or if you're rich, stale milk/parlour washings.

If your a real bone fide farmer cream suede lace boots or the tan slipon 'dealer' boots with elastic on the side can be worn 'for good wear.' Ie funerals, sunday mass, GAA games, ag shows.

A bodywarmer is not only very comfy, but as with the aforementioned footwear, highly fashionable.
