Cab conversion

    So I'm a sole trader in legitimate need of up scaling to a jeep. I was on a forecourt yesterday and I'd some salesman saying that a cab conversion of a private/domestic Nissan Murano or an X5 would be an option (I need to keep the back seat for my two kids who'd occasionally be there). He did say it was a bit of a grey area. Can anyone comment on the proceedure and legality of it as the drop in road tax is astronomical.

    The rules on what vehicles qualify as crew cabs have been relaxed a few years back but the rules about who can tax a crew cab commercially have been tightened up. I think you need to demonstrate the need to transport your employees between places of work.

    Didnt think a murano would qualify, size wise. Aren't there restrictions?

    Bottom line is I really doubt you would be able to commercially tax a jeep/x5/murano and keep the rear seats as the cargo area would be far too small.

    I know Ford tried that last year with 2x rear seats in a Kuga commercial. Check that option

    Just to add, if you have kids in a commercial vehicle during a weekend and are stopped at a checkpoint, best of luck as commercially taxed vehicles are just for commercial purposes.

    I used temp staff frequently, does that count?

    Well my business operates 7 days a week so I think I'm in the clear there, I could justify that I need to have the use of the seats for transporting staff and the kids are in them as I'm a single parent (which I am).

    I know a guy that was stopped at a Traffic Corp checkpoint while dropping his two kids (both Teenagers) to school in his work supplied crew cab and they made him call for a taxi for the kids and also warned him that if he was caught again that they would be informing the revenue and his employer would be facing a hefty fine....

    In theory,that is true. In reality you probably would have had to draw some kind of attention on yourself in the first place.

    I've been breathalysed at 3am countless times,clearly on my way back from a night out and not a word said about commercial tax


    You could probably get a crew cab x5 done if you know where to look,ask a few people in the trade. They generally come about because a few different people in a few different centres are friendly with each other and sign them off

    nevertheless it has always been the rule that you cannot use a commercially taxed vehicle for anything other than commercial purposes and you have to sign a declaration to that effect in order to tax it. Form RF111A

    True.. But until it becomes enforced, then it's a useless rule. It's practically unenforceable anyway. Checkpoint: vehicle taxed, tick... Insured, tick..... Test in date, tick.... On yer way there sir. Not saying it's right, but it's the way it is.

    The laws are clear to the use of a commercial vehicle for private use requires private tax and you are declaring that it's only for commercial use when you sign the RF111, but in reality it's not going to be enforced, well maybe if you p1ss off the wrong Gard.

    The difference is that what you are looking to do is dealing with a tax issue. The issue with using a private car for work is an insurance issue.

    As for your OP, it is of course against the rules... It's up to you if you're willing to flout the rules like thousands already do, or if you want to stay within the law, get a commercial for work and a car for the offspring
