Ok lads, a bit of fun and truth.

I know the good golfers on here are a modest bunch , keep the handicap and head down (metaphorically and literally ;)) .

So, not sure this will work. But, worth a try.

This is a thread where we ask question to the best golfers on here. Get a feel for how they got there , why they got there.
Too often we get orders and instructions from lads - we are not too sure of their credentials , we talk about shafts and equipment and fitting, the Golf Club scene and the pro game.

But, we should have a thread that recognises excellence in the game we love (as part time golfers). It is also a credit to the fact, that we have great golfers on here. Who have to deal with the realities of life, work, relationships and bills.

Are they normal , how do they do it, are they odd, they seem it from the life of a normal golfer. :D

Yes - I've learnt something (large or small) about the game from everyone I ever played with , but time to give the low guys the limelight - well done Rik on great thread. If top ten changes or your handicap is lower, please answer also, so we widen thread a little - So, 5 or below, we will turn a blind eye.

    1 Golfgorfield (-2.5)
    2 Pinkdoubleeagle (-0.2)
    3 Shabalala 2.4
    4 Galwaylad14 4.3
    5 Nozebleed 4.5
    6 Rollotomasi 4.7
    7 Sevesthreeiron 4.7
    8 xFROSTY Gx 4.7
    9 Rikand 4.8
    10 Dublin Spur 5.0

( I know above is not all the golfers on here 5 or less - so please post away if 5 or less)

So we will see how thing go - but to start

    1) How long are you playing , what is your lowest handicap, how did you start to play ?
    2) What is your lowest score over/under par ?
    3) How many lessons have you had, how often - did you even get or stick with a coach - how did you make that big breakthrough ?
    4) How much do you honestly practice and play - what did it take ? (if you want to answer this, did other things in you life suffer ?)
    5) Did the practice and getting low make you fall out of love with the game or are you still in love with it ?
    6) What was / is your motivation in the past or for the future ?
    7) Have you any more major goals ?
    8) What is your greatest achievement ?
    9) Is being low , and staying low a pressure , is there an image issue with it ? Have you seen lads try to stay too low ?
    10) Do you carry your bag, is the equipment thing a load of golf balls :D
    11) If you could only pick one thing that you worked on, that made the biggest difference to your game, what would it be ?

Anyway - reply to above , or give any info you like.

If you want to pass on any question above or as the thread goes on. We will have a thing similar to the Fifth Amendment - just post the word "shank"
And we will not ask any more about it. :)

    Hopefully we get something back.

Late now, and so/too many questions - catch tomorrow.

lol - cool thread, but tbh, I doubt I'd be in the top 10 if all the low guys posted up their handicap :) - If you look at previous incarnations of the handicap index, there are a few other scratch/1/2 handicap golfers that post here that arent getting involved in the goals thread :D

    Anyways!

    1) How long are you playing , what is your lowest handicap, how did you start to play ?

I'm playing since I'm 8 year of age. My lowest handicap was 4(4.2) which I achieved 3 years ago. I've kept myself fairly in and around 4,5,6 for a number of years (2008ish - present), though 2013 was a minor slip as I went through a swing change and my handicap slipped out to 7 briefly. I've since righted that wrong, lol :)
I got into golf thanks to my dad whom I still play with every Sunday. From the age of 6, I started going out caddying for him. I'd only wheel the bag for about 4 or 5 holes and then get tired and just walk the rest, but that's when my love affair with golf began. From the age of 8 my dad was letting me use his clubs to hit a few balls at the same as he was playing with his friends and at 9 years of age, he got me my own junior clubs. It all kicked off from there :D

    2) What is your lowest score over/under par ?

My lowest score in the summer time in competition play is 3 under par. - Had 3 birdies and 15 pars. Birdied the 1st, 15th and 18th :D - Unreal day of ball striking and putting. I'll never forget it :D

    3) How much lessons have you had - did you even stick with a coach - how did you make that big breakthrough ?

Got lessons when I first started from the local pro in Athlone at the time. At the time I didnt appreciate them, but when I look back at it now and the most valuable thing I should have learned from him was tempo. Nice and easy, back and through. After that, the Junior Convenor of our club organised lessons for all the juniors who were showing some sort of potential from the age of 15 onwards with Arty Pike who's based in Shannon. He got EVERYONE hitting this big high draw! Which I continued to hit until about 3 years ago when I went to a friend of mine who was training as a pro, Hugh Feeney. He was fantastic. Explained things so well! We changed a good bit. Posture and swing path mainly. I used to be very crouched over the ball and had a very flat swing, I now stand a lot taller, have much better posture and my swing path is completely different. There was a lot of things he refused to touch. I had excellent timing ( I had to have, or I would never have gotten as low as I got with the swing I had, lol ) and an excellent grip. But everything else changed. We worked on it for an entire winter. I bought into it big time and even when my handicap went out to 7, I knew the swing was right and I persisted with it.

There was no huge breakthrough. I gradually slowly worked my way down in handicap. I'd get cut a few shots, learn how to play off that handicap and then work my way down a little more. I wasn't one of these kids who got cut from 16 to 4 in 3 months. I went from 16 - 12, then 12 - 11, then 11 to 9, then 9 to 10, lol, then 10 to 8, to 7, to 6, where I was for about 3 years and then pushed into 5 and 4. When I was a kid ( 12 years of age ) I set a target of myself that I wanted to get to 6. That was my lifetime goal and I eventually got there about 15 years later and when I did, it was AMAZING, but it took me a long time to re-focus my goals and start to aim lower

    4) How much do you honestly practice and play - what did it take ?

In the winter time, as it is now, I play most Sundays. That's it. In the summer I will practice a lot. I love going out at 6 AM and hitting the practice ground for 2 hours before work. It's so peaceful. There's not a sinner out there. Just you, the course and your clubs. Magic. In the summer I will play a minimum of 3 times a week, but usually average 4 to 5 times a week. Just getting out practicing, even hitting the putting green for an hour, just doing something. And then on my 2 days off, I'm in the back garden with a club and checking myself out against the back door. posture, position, swing

I'm not gifted at golf at all. I have to work incredibly hard at it. BUT I LOVE IT!

    5) Did the practice and getting low make you fall out of love with the game or are you still in love with it ?

Still love it. i will always love it :D But I'm not low enough yet. I want to get to at least 2!

    6) What was / is your motivation in the past or future ?

I just want to get as low as I can go. I still believe I can and I'm going to keep trying till I do. Deep down I have a dream of playing the Seniors Tour. I've a long way to go if I ever want to have a chance of getting there :D

    7) Have you any more major goals ?

    ^^ Seniors Tour.

But ultimately be a regular at the West/South/East/North. I'm not good enough now, but I'd love to be one day! :)

    8) What is your greatest achievement ?

Myself and my dad winning the club fourball. It's a matchplay competition. Stableford qualifier with at the time, top 32 qualifying for matchplay. I cant remember much of the matches anymore, it was around 10 years ago now but in the final, we happened to be playing against another father/son combination. After 11 holes, we were 3 up and cruising and all off a sudden, my game disappeared completely. Maybe I got nervous or complacent, or what, I have no idea, but it just went and our lead wittled down to all square playing the 17th. My dad played brilliantly to get us to that position. On the 17th hole myself and my dad both missing the green and the oppositions low guy hit it, about 10 feet passed the hole. We both chipped on to about 3 feet each and the guy on the green raced his putt 20 feet passed the hole. It was all downhill and he must have thought he needed to make it..... He missed the one back. I putted first and made sure of the 4 and dad rolled in a very tricky 3 footer to win the hole.

1 up playing the last I told my dad I was done playing **** and I was going to win this hole for us and he told me to stop ****ing around and just go and do it! - I ripped my drive up 18 too far and it finished on the up-slope and hit this incredible 8 iron from 150 yards into 5 feet. Dad got a bit paniccy and thought it might have been too big but I was so sure when I hit it, it was going to be perfect. Green was blind to us, but we remembered seeing the pin on the very back of the green, 4 yards from the back edge and I was exactly pin high! I just told him not to worry. I had hit it perfectly and it was going to be stone dead!

    It was...

Winning that competition with my dad was easily my greatest golfing achievement

    9) Is being low , and staying low a pressure , is there an image issue with it ? Have you seen lads try to stay too low ?

It's pressure because I WANT to stay low. But if I ended up not being good enough to stay low and my handicap drifted out, then no worries. I'd absolutely crush it at Jimmy Bruen! I know I'd be too good off 6 for most of the guys out there..... and that's not an ego thing. I just know! I dont know about an image issue.... It's not an issue, but I am proud to say I play off 5 when people ask me, even though secretly I try to downplay it :D

I'm going to make no comment at this particular time to the second part of that question :D

    10) Do you carry your bag, is the equipment thing a load of golf balls

Yes I carry my bag. Yes it's a load of golf balls, lol. I carry because I like to and because I can :) When I can't carry anymore, I will get the electric.

That's all probably a lot longer than you were looking for. But I look the sound of my own fingers hitting the keyboard (ego!) :D

And one other question for now...

If you could only pick one thing that you worked on that made the biggest difference to your game what would it be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭ForeRight

I'm off 4.8 now so I'll answer these questions as best I can in regard to my golf.....

    1) How long are you playing , what is your lowest handicap, how did you start to play ?

Always played p&p as a kid and teen. As I got older I played golf approx 3-4 times a year with my dad. Often went a couple of years without a game though. Gave up soccer at age 31 and have been playing regular club golf since then which is nearly 4 years now.

    2) What is your lowest score over/under par ?

Shot 70 and 71 twice last summer. 72 couple of times too. All on par 72 courses.

    3) How many lessons have you had - did you even stick with a coach - how did you make that big breakthrough ?

    Never had a lesson

    4) How much do you honestly practice and play - what did it take ? (if you want to answer, did other things suffer ?)

I work shift. Lots of nights and weekends so all week days I have the little one all day. Missus comes home at 6 and I'm standing waiting and I'm gone to practice. I just play holes and try different shots. Nothing regimental. I just play to enjoy the shots. Always had a good short game from the p&p as a kid. The only thing that's suffered is my fitness. Was very fit but have gotten lazy. I'm running to play golf instead of killing myself in ye gym a couple of times a week. All my prsctice is summer only in the late evenings. I enjoy a break in winter. I went nearly 7 weeks without holding a club before xmas.

    5) Did the practice and getting low make you fall out of love with the game or are you still in love with it ?

Love golf still as much as ever

    6) What was / is your motivation in the past or for the future ?

I'm motivated by the challenge I think. It's a hard game and super competitive and very individual. Nobody else to blame. I've always been competitive with everything. I don't know if that's s good or bad thing though.

    7) Have you any more major goals ?

Never really set out any major goals for golf. I just enjoy playing. It is what is is for me. A game I love to play and we keep score to get a winner. If I win that's great but I don't get carried away. If I play crap I don't lose any sleep.

    8) What is your greatest achievement ?

Went from 18 to 5 in about 2 years. Don't know if it's an achievement as my handicap was just way off where it should have been.

    9) Is being low , and staying low a pressure , is there an image issue with it ? Have you seen lads try to stay too low ?

I don't find any pressure. I'm not playing for a living so being low isnt a big deal. Staying low..... I'm not really bothered. The handicap looks after itself depending how I'm playing. I don't really think about it.

    10) Do you carry your bag, is the equipment thing a load of golf balls :D

During the summer I carry. Winter I use a trolley to have my rain gear and all the other bits needed with me.

Personally I think the equipment thing is garbage. I've never bought into the hype of new gadgets etc but each to their own. I still use the same ****ty cavity clubs I've had over 3 years now and I hit them as far as anyone I've played with so far.

We played together last summer fix and nothing has changed in my game

    Class post Rik,

Exactly what I was looking for.

Love it. ( You could have used Shank on 9)

But will let it go as made edit to OP a few times :D.

Reading that, I feel , you know what , this crazy thing going on in my head of wanting to improve, is not just me. It is part of many golfers no matter what level. I love the part with your Dad - so many of us here have had that , but now, sadly can't do it. Maybe our time to do the same for our kids is coming up.

Sorry lads , I'm not going to be thread commentator.

But, ForeRight - that is what I love about your game , it doesn't bother you.

With everything I've studied about the game , that is one of the great secrets of the game.

maybe I should be the thread commentator (lol)

Space, I've added yours at 11. Good one to end on , as it is a quick reminder at end to rest of us.

We will let lads answer main body , then open forum after on other questions.

All forum please comment away. thanks lads for such detailed replies. We will be back with more questions after we see how many 5 or under we get.

Before reading through my answers I must inform you that from about the end of summer 2009 until the start of summer 2014 my golf game was very casual(for me). On average consisting of one full 18 holes every 2-3 weeks with less than 1 hour practice

1: I'm 23 now and I've been playing golf for about 10 years at this stage. My lowest handicap is my current handicap of 4.7. I started to play one summer when i was 12ish when my dad would drop me off at the golf club most mornings and not pick me up until he finished work that evening for about 2 summer holidays in a row.

2: My lowest score in competition is -1 gross. I've had a few under par rounds in the States while on holidays. I did have have one round at my home club where I shot level par which consisted of 18 pars. I had 16 birdie putts that day but none of them wanted to go home

3: Overall I'd say I've had about 20 lessons throughout my golfing days so far I'd say. I used to get lessons fairly regularly when I was a junior (pre-2009) however between the middle of 2009 and up until november 2014 I didnt have 1 lesson (purely due to lack of interest) Since then I've had 2 lessons and I feel I've been able to accept and adapt to these lessons alot better ever than before. Probably due to the fact I feel I've matured quite a bit and willing to take other people's points/ideas on board.
Honestly I never felt as though there was a big breakthrough. Just taking on board what my coaches were telling me and slowly enacting it into my own game.

4: On average during the full swing of the summer golfing season I would play 2x18 holes competitions per week. On a very rough estimate I would guess that I was putting in about 10-15 hours practice on top of this.
As regards my personal life, not much suffered due to the fact that the majority of my immediate friends emigrated, the majority of my family live in a very close radius and my girlfriend has caddied for quite a few years so we could happily still bond on the golf course haha

5:Honestly I did lose interest for quite a while. Turning 18 in 2009 resulted in Drinking and going out socialising with friends, which took the better of me for quite a while but right now I am more in love with the game than ever before I can honestly say.

6:One of my motivations at the moment is seeing how one of my friends from when I was younger pushed himself for years on end and got himself a european tour card last year. Now I'm not saying I am aiming for the tour anytime soon but just seeing what can be done with the right desire is motivation right there. I feel and know I can be alot better than I already am so I want to keep pushing myself until I hit a plateau.

7:Major goals for within the next 2 years. Be a top player on my clubs senior cup panel. Qualify and play a few Irish amateur events.

8: Greatest achievement so far is winning 2 mens singles events back to back at my home club in 2008. Yes it is almost 7 years ago since then but 2014 was a year where I just wanted to see if I felt I had the capability to progress further with golf. Which I feel I have so I'm very much looking forward to what 2015 has in stall for me.

9:Honestly I wouldn't say being off a low handicap hasn't been of any mental pressure we'll say to me anyway. (a handicap is there for a reason) Personally I don't think there is an image with it for me anyway. I worked in the bar of my golf club for 5 years while I was a single figure handicap and the majority of people I would serve didn't even know I played golf

10: Most of the time I carry my bag. I only take out the tour bag and electric trolley for singles events and matchplays :) Regarding equipment it's a very shady area I feel. the majority of clubs in my bag I've had for 6-7 years at least. Sure the latest irons or driver might be a tiny bit more forgiving or might give you a few extra yards distance wise. But in reality that doesn't matter if your short game is lacking. The short game is where you save and gain the shots!!!! (MY 56 degree wedge is 5 years old and almost completely worn down but it's still one of my favourite clubs in the bag)

11:The biggest thing is the short game for sure. Over the last 2 months in particular I've focused on short putts (<10ft) as these are the putts that can make or break your round.

Well that took a lot longer to reply too than expected :D

It's just my own experiences/opinion at the end of the day but if anyone has any further questions by all means PM me or ask away on this thread :pac:

Right it's 3am. Time to go to bed. Teeing off in less than 7 hours(if there is no frost delay)

I've enjoyed the posts thus far and look forward to more. As someone who has aspirations of making this list one day (current HCP 6.3) it's sobering to hear how much more is required to drop those next two shots.

I would play 3 Saturday's out of 4 with maybe one midweek practise round a month even in the height of summer. I would only get to the driving range twice a month and my short game practise is limited to 15mins chipping and putting before teeing off on a Saturday morning. Having read this back maybe I should just be content with what I've achieved.

You low men have earned even more respect seeing just what you put into your game.

    1) How long are you playing , what is your lowest handicap, how did you start to play ?

I started playing when I was around 12/13 - Mainly Par 3 courses with my pals and the odd round with my Dad at his club. I joined my dad's club as a junior when I was around 14 and started out with a handicap of 26. I played regularly enough after that and eventually got down to 11 by age 17. Golf took a bit of a back seat from then until I was around 33.
(Age 18-21) was pretty hectic socially with pubs, nightclubs & chasing women taking over - no regrets :D
(Age 22-26) I moved to Sydney, Golf just wasn't on the agenda, I did play a few times over there but there was no structure to it and I didn't know many golfers.
(Age 27-33) Back in Ireland and all funds where directed towards getting a job, house, car not to mention weddings. Membership at the time was very pricey so Golf just was not a priority
(Age 34 to 37) I rejoined my old club, did the 3 card thing and got a handicap of 12 - within a year I was down to 6, then I floated between 7 and 5, I decided to take a year out in 2013 for a few reasons - I kinda stopped enjoying the game + some of my regular playing partners also left + money was pretty tight at the time.
(Age 38 - to now, nearly 40) I joined a new club at the end of 2013 and was given a handicap of 5, since then I've been out to 6 once and down to 4 on 3 occasions.

    2) What is your lowest score over/under par ?

-1 (71) at my old club - yellow tees + placing
+2 best medal gross which I have managed a few times

    3) How many lessons have you had, how often - did you even get or stick with a coach - how did you make that big breakthrough ?

Never had a lesson - but am considering looking at doing some this year.

    4) How much do you honestly practice and play - what did it take ? (if you want to answer this, did other things in you life suffer ?)

Play around once a week Sep to April, a little more from May to Aug but I reckon still less than twice a week on average.

I play around 4 or 5 practice games on my own in the summer after work plus maybe 7 or 8 visits to to driving range during the year. That's the only practice I do other than a few putts before every game.

    5) Did the practice and getting low make you fall out of love with the game or are you still in love with it ?

Still love it but I got tired of it in 2013 and took 11 months out - it was a positive move looking back. I found the low handicap very difficult to compete
where every mistake takes a big toll on your score. Basically everything has to go right if you are to have a competitive score - I found this difficult to deal with mentally and needed a break - it was getting me down. The break helped me to re-evaluate why I play and why I love the game - Now I am a lot more comfortable with a bad shot, hole, 9 or round. The way I see it if the best players in the world can have 12-15 shot differentials in 2 rounds of the same tournament than so can us amateurs - I learned that disappointment is a fundamental part of the game - just do your best, believe in yourself and most importantly - enjoy yourself.

    6) What was / is your motivation in the past or for the future ?

In the past was to play off single figures
In the future would be to get to 4 again and hold onto it with comfort, would also love to win a medal - been runner up twice.

    7) Have you any more major goals ?

Play in the senior cup and barton shield again
    Win a medal
Get to a lower handicap (with comfort)

    8) What is your greatest achievement ?

    Getting to 4.2
Winning the presidents prize at my previous club
playing in the barton shield last year and qualifying for the knock-outs

    9) Is being low , and staying low a pressure , is there an image issue with it ? Have you seen lads try to stay too low ?

Yes - it's pressurised, because I won't want to go backwards, but If I need more shots in order to be competitive I'll take them - there's no sense in having a low handicap if you can't compete. Let the system decide.

I think everyone trys to stay as low as possible bar the cheats. I havn't seen a low player not putting in a bad card to protect a 0.1. I understand that this does happen - its total madness to me.

    10) Do you carry your bag, is the equipment thing a load of golf balls

Motocaddy - just got my first ever fitting yesterday so I'll come back to you on that in a few months ;)

    11) If you could only pick one thing that you worked on, that made the biggest difference to your game, what would it be ?

mental toughness - belief in yourself to close out a strong round - its still very much a work in progress

I'll give it a go, enjoyed the responses so far!

    1) Playing since I was 11, now 31. Got to 1.1, currently 2.6.

    2) -4, 67 around Lucan Golf Club off the tips.

    3) Would have been involved in lessons with junior coaching, have only had a minimum number of lessons since. I don't know if I ever made a breakthrough as in 'Eureka' moment - I did have to work on my grip, which was extremely strong as a junior, less so now.

    4) Over the summer, I'll play a minimum of twice a week. I practice a fair bit, although I wish it was a more disciplined, productive type of practice. Tend to play more than I practice, particularly over the winter. Don't really think my golf has come at the expense of anything, although herself may disagree!

    5) I remember Mickey Wright, an American LPGA pro, once saying that the pure pleasure she wrought from simply swinging a golf club was her reason for playing. I love the optimism that accompanies a round or even a practice session. Even though this game has broken my heart many times over, I still feel enthusiastic at the start of every round. I'll quit if that ever goes.

    6) Motivation is to get to scratch and to be able to play off it. I play a lot of competitive games so that equates to a lot of point ones over the year, so to get to scratch would be a huge achievement for me. Beyond that, I'd love to be able to say I played all four provincials. I've played only the North of Ireland a couple of times as it stands, and yet to make the cut (although it was a thrill to shoot -5 the back 9 one year in Rathmore; I won't say what I shot the front!). The standard is incredible, just to qualify in one of them takes very good playing.

    7) I suppose I'd quite like to win the Captain's Prize in our place. Extremely difficult prospect if you look at the list of most recent winners, all between the 10-18 handicap bracket, but I've managed to win some big ones (a medal and 2 other 'majors') by shooting damn good gross scores so you never know!

    8) Winning the Junior Scratch Cup in Lucan in 2008 off 4. I was playing some good golf going in and just felt it'd be my day. Had a good shot to win the Carlow JSC the previous year before bad weather and poor play scuppered my chances, but at least felt like I'd learned from that experience. Shot a really good first round, a +2 73, which included a birdie at the last to give me a little momentum going into round 2, then played (for me) almost flawless golf for the second 18. I think I had 2 birdies and two bogies in a level par 71 and I won by 6 shots. My brother came to watch me up the last, and I'll never forget hitting an 8 iron for my third shot into about 4 feet in front of him to seal the deal. Bit of a let-down yipping the putt; had to hole a good one back in the end!
Have to mention winning the club foursomes with my Dad as well, a proud victory!

    9) I never felt any pressure to stay low. I try as hard as I can for 18 holes, for 40 or 50 counting rounds during the year and add 'em up at the end. Re: lads trying too hard to stay low, I've never personally seen it but it obviously happens. Don't really see the point personally, it's an exercise in self-delusion.

    10) I'm as interested in equipment as the next player. Nothing like a new club or gizmo to motivate, but I do wonder what improvements have truly been made in the last 15 years. I feel pros are more inclined these days to hang on to 'favourite' clubs and not immediately change to the newest model regardless of money offered. Freddie Couples was using a driver that's 6 years old as recently as the Masters this year, and McIlroy had a 3 wood that was even older before he switched to Nike. I do think technology has reached a wall of sorts because of those examples.
I pull my clubs on a trolley. They're in a tour-bag though, so I do wonder if I'm wearing myself out a little more than needs be because of it. Will never use an electric trolley until I physically can't do without it, which will hopefully be a few years down the road.

    11) Attitude. I used to get extremely angry and I'd give up on a round after a bad stretch of holes, so I've really tried to change that. There is always something to play for, no matter how bad things are going!

Possible question......best tip you ever got ?....you'd see pros asked that a good bit.

Great thread, playing off 12 my ambition would obviously be single figures but i look at lads playing off 9 and they are just that more their approach shots are more consistent, driving i feel that i am at that level and my short game chipping and putting around the green is my strong point. The one thing that has really improved my game this year especially my driving is a year is a relaxed Grip and swing, my focus is always on reducing tension and tightness when i stand up with the driver.

    1) Im playing 3 years. Lowest handicap to date is 4.3. Started playing after hanging up the hurl and helmet.

    2) Lowest score is -2 around my home course, ive played to par on 2 other occasions. Best away score would be +2 in kileen.

    3) Have yet to take a lesson one on one. I dont think i can justify the fee. You tube works good for me.

    4) I play 3 times a week minumium. Usually one practice round alone where ill hit 2 or 3 balls mostly long irons and drives for practice.

    5) Playing golf can be heartbreaking,i found year one was a real buzz,i was playing off 19 and basically just whacking the ball around the course care free and if it got close to target great if not i was nearly running up to play the next shot. No thoughts about technique or distance,Very enjoyable. Year 2 i started off on 16 but i tried to refine my swing and become a proper golfer but it was very frustrated,i did get down to 9 but lost the best part of summer struggling with bad hook for 2/3 months. Year 3 expectations were sky high,i sorted my hook by changing my grip and it all came good fairly quick reduced my handicap down to 4.3 mid summer and bounced between 4&5 for the rest of the year.

    6) I just wana enjoy the game well. Chip away at the handicap with scratch being the ultimate goal.

    7) No. Ha ha.

    8) Greatest achievement would be the round of -2 last year. 5 birdies in a single round.

    9) Yep i wana keep my handicap low. Im even considering entering just one competition a month this year. Im not sure i could be bothered entering a comp when the wind is howling or rain lashing down anymore.

    10) No,electric trolley for me,but id like a pencil bag for hitting the range with 4 or 5 clubs.

    11) Grip. Everything revolves around the grip for me..and maybe posture. Im working on posture at the moment, trying to starighten my back and lock the hips at address..balance is key and i tend to sway from time to time. So thats what ill be focusing on this year.

    Great idea for thread.
I always thought to be low single figure golfer you have to start young and put in serious hours like rikand's post suggests. Its great to hear some lads that dont start taking it serious until their early 30s can still get low.
    hope for us all

    Either

    a.) you're a natural
b.) you have to work incredibly hard at it
    c.) you're both

I would be a (b) - but there seems to be an awful amount of (a)'s here and I am incredibly envious of you guys! ;)

Interesting thread. Here's my tuppence (which actually is worth about tuppence in current money).

    1) Playing since 8. Auld lad was on founding committee in local club in 1988. Got a 36 handicap at that stage. Got down to 7 when I was 16 and kind of stepped back from playing seriously for about 10 years. Mainly due to study/work. If I had my time again I'd swap all the work and the saving for an overpriced house (which is worth SFA now) for a few shots off my handicap! Rejoined as a full member about 10 years ago and got 13 handicap. Reduced to 6 quick enough. Off 4 for a while and currently 5.

    2) Two under in a regular comp.
    Level off the tips.
A funny one - won the gross with five under in a Taylor Made 15" hole competition last September at Royal Tara. Can't count that I suppose.

    3) As many lessons as possible - five or six a year anyway. As Bob Torrance said, you can't brush your hair without a mirror.

Most productive ones were from an American chap named Stephen O'Donnell years ago in the driving range close to Fairyhouse Cross in Meath. It's closed down long ago. Tried to track him down a while ago and couldn't. If anyone knows where he is I'd love to know.

    4) The job is a killer for me. Work six days a week, including weekends. Have two young kids also. I get Fridays off and play a counting competition somewhere. Aside from that, it's any practice I can fit in on a weekday morning, maybe from 9-10.30, about twice a week. Sometimes not at all depending on work/home. Bit of chipping from the shed to the dog-bowl in the back garden on summer evenings.

    5) I compare my love for golf at the moment to fancying a beautiful woman who is playing hard to get - she is always just out of reach, as much as I may lust after playing the back 9 with her.

    6) I always wanted to get to 5, that was my personal target. After getting there, I've found my ball striking is still not great and I'm not nearly as good as I thought I would be, playing off 5. Now I'm of the opinion that the really good ball strikers and the guys you really want to aspire to are off scratch or plus handicaps.

    7) I'd love to be able to hit a 4-iron with a draw that carries 190 yards, whenever I want. The handicap will follow.

I started a golf fitness program with Robbie Cannon in the last few months. Have a newborn here so hoping that stretching/exercising at home will help with my swing when I do get back to playing regularly again in a few months.

    8) Won a monthly medal in 2013, +1 gross
Came second in JSC last year with same score. (P***** me right off, I'd love to have won that competition!)

    9) When I'm playing crap I have a tendency to look at bogeys or double bogeys in terms of my handicap. Say it's a double bogey early in the round, I'm thinking, 'f***, that's two of my five shots gone. It's a struggle from here'. If I could just hit the 'off' button on my brain while playing I'd be a lot better off.

    10) I have a large enough bag on an electric trolly. Used to carry the bag but a bulging lower disc (since 2007) had a few things to say about that.

Since the 460cc driver heads came in, in the mid-2000s, I've yet to find any new club that makes a significant difference to me. The whole driver market has plateaued, for the time being anyway until they make it legal to shoot the ball out of a rocket. I like testing different clubs out from pro shop during practice, same with balls, and rarely find much of a difference. Lessons and good flexibility are the way to go I reckon.

    11) Any good round I play always has a low number of putts, between 28-32. If I play crap, I'm generally up around 35 or 36. I used to obsess about not hitting it far enough but, for me anyhow, if I chip and putt well I'll do fine.

Firstly, I think this thread should really for the properly low players of 2 or under. I don't think there is a big difference between a 5 or 9 handicap other then a bit of consistency. Here-goes anyway:

    1) How long are you playing , what is your lowest handicap, how did you start to play ?
I started when I was 16 and I’m 42 now. Through my 20’s and 30’s between college and work, I probably played only once a month or less and that was mostly in fourball comps.

My lowest is my current handicap. I was given a h/c of 16 when starting out and over the years it went slowly down. I hovered around 9 for some time and then 7 before pushing on in recent times.

I started when a few mates at school who played a little, dragged me out.

    2) What is your lowest score over/under par ?
I’ve not broken par yet. I’ve had a few level par and a few ‘couple over’ rounds with most of those in the last two years.
I’ve had plenty of sub-par nine holes stretches and a best 9 holes of 32 but can’t yet leave the silly stuff off the card.

    3) How much lessons have you had - did you even stick with a coach - how did you make that big breakthrough ?
Other then one lesson at the start, I didn't have any lessons until my late thirties.
In recent years with a desire to improve before I get too old, I wanted to have some lessons to pinpoint area to improve.

However, I think I’ve always had what would be considered a decent swing and constantly work on the swing fundamentals and so the lessons has only given small bits to work on. Even the Old Lad in Lepordstown Driving range had nothing but good to say!:)

I haven’t stuck with the same coach.

I made my eureka moment breakthroughs through reading, youtube golf vids and practice. Also, understanding the new ball flight laws have helped me (try to) shape shots and diagnose bad shots.

    4) How much do you honestly practice and play - what did it take ?
These days, I would probably spend 30 mins a day putting on an indoor matt with an alignment mirror while watching TV and I’d spend 15 mins a day swinging the club with a correct grip, alignment posture, visualisation. I feel I don't need to hit loads of balls anymore to stay sharp from tee to green. I’m working on flexibility and strength exercises too from this Jan.

I only play once a week (or ten days) once the weather improves but not much at this time of the year. I know the short game is being overlooked but can't do much about that at the moment.

    5) Did the practice and getting low make you fall out of love with the game or are you still in love with it ?
No, I love the practice and trying to perfect the impossible - theres nothing better then hitting the course early on a sunny morning and playing a few balls.
For me, practicing and playing in competitions are different things but equally enjoyable.

    6) What was / is your motivation in the past or future ?
No past motivations of note (which was the problem, perhaps).

Motivation for the future started after hitting 40, which was to be as good as possible before time catches up.

    7) Have you any more major goals ?
This year, I’d like to start breaking par and win a multiple junior scratch cups. A tough ask but important to have a goal.
Longer term would be to compete in senior scratch cups.

Lived away from my home club meant I was never in the running for teams, which is a regret. So perhaps a goal would be to feature on a club team.

    8) What is your greatest achievement ?
Not enough so far - I won my first junior scratch only last year, which was a goal at the start of the year.

    9) Is being low , and staying low a pressure , is there an image issue with it ? Have you seen lads try to stay too low ?
I feel no pressure being or staying low(ish) as i think I'm still improving. No image issue for me but as said above, I don't think 5 is all that good and only fractions better than 9. Image and bragging rights start at scratch, in my opinion.

Not really seen anyone trying to stay too low but have seen players react to pressure in taking poor play to heart in competitions (with one walk-off from a playing partner at a scratch cup last year).

    10) Do you carry your bag, is the equipment thing a load of golf balls
No, I’ve never carried my bag - i’ll leave that to the lads who wear the white belts :)

I recently replaced my push caddy to an electric caddy for competitions in order to feel fresher toward the end of a round.

I have mixed feelings about equipment. I’ve been fitted at all of the well known places. However, my fitted woods have been currently replaced with unfitted clubs: a used driver from an ex-demo bin and a formally retired 8 year old 3 wood. My irons are about 8 yrs old too.

My evolving opinion on equipment is what matters less are the figures the launch monitor spit out - more important are liking how the club sits at address, the appearance, the sound and feel of the club - things that help with confidence (but every new club should at least be hit on the range).

    11) If you could only pick one thing that you worked on, that made the biggest difference to your game, what would it be ?
Having no swing thoughts when on the course. Instead use pre-shot visualisation, feel, and focusing on the target.

Again, I’m more interested in hearing what the low-low guys have to say!

    1) I'm probably playing on and off for 10 years or so. Played a lot in my mid teens then nothing much at all from maybe 17-20 and then a lot again over the last 2 or 3 years.

I'm currently at my lowest at 4.3. Started to play because a couple of my school friends did but they've basically given up now bar an odd bit of messing around.

    2) level par twice are my best competitive rounds. I never really play the full 18 unless it's a competition but I've been under par for 9 or 12 holes when out practising once or twice.

    3) I'd say maybe 10 in total all from the one guy. No reason to change as I'd usually go to him if I start playing poorly and he's always able to sort it out for me, generally in 1 lesson. I'd basically go to him any time my game goes south for a period of a few weeks. I should probably be more pro-active about this though and take lessons before I hit some bad form.

    4) this time of year I'd say I play maybe one 18 hole round (weekend comp) then maybe 10 or 12 holes once during the week if I get a chance (almost always do) and maybe one range session. In the summer I play a good bit more. I'd play probably two 18 hole rounds along with 10 or 12 holes on maybe 2 other evenings. Wouldn't really do much on the range or chipping green unless there's something specific I'm working on. Maybe if it was quiet when I'm playing the few holes I'd do a bit of chipping and putting on whatever the last hole I play is for a few minutes.

My practice defintley involves a lot more playing than pounding golf balls.

Golf has never negatively affected anything in my life, I'm a student so I do have plenty of time for it.

    5) still love the game but to be fair since I really started putting the time in to improve I've been consistently able to keep improving, the real test will be if this starts to stagnate can I stay in love with the game.

    6) getting to scratch is basically my sole goal. I suppose I'd love to win a senior scratch up at some stage too.

    7) no if I got to scratch and picked up maybe a couple of scratch cups I'd be delighted with my golfing "career". Although if I did get there I know the only thing in my head would be getting that bit better again.

    8) Id say the 2 level par rounds are my greatest achievement. Not many golfers can say they've ever been able to match the par of the golf course.

    9) don't really find it a pressure but I haven't been down low for all that long so this might become more of a factor in time.

    10) carry. Well I'm tall so I must say getting for a set of irons did improve my game, I'm not sure what the pay offs would be for someone of average height though.

    11) my answer is going to be vague here and say ball striking. Just all through the bag I worked on my ball striking and it's very rare now that I'll hit a really wild one or have a total mis-hit and for me the knock on effect of that is that it means I don't make many doubles or worse which is absolutley vital. I always say at my handicap a bogey isn't a huge problem but a double is a killer, half my handicap allowance gone in one hole. For my game at least the main way to keep doubles off the card is by having a good long game because when I'm on or around the green in regulation I'm realistically never going to make a double from that situation.

great thread. I am not currently in the top 10 (not bitter about that at all!) but love to start Monday morning doing nothing work related on works time.

    1. playing about 5 years now (as a golf club member) and playing at my lowest currently which is 5. A good friend was bugging me for months to come play and join his club, we played a casual round there one summer and I signed up the next day, given a h/c of 22 which I had fun with the first year. I was drawn to the social and the competitive side of golf.

    2. 1 over gross on the middle tees at home club, 4 over on the back tees. ive had a pair of 1 unders at away clubs and lots of level par rounds in the last year. I play a lot of competitons in a year.

    3. two lessons at the start of 2013, really helped me understand and control my swingpath. I hadn't thought about swing mechanics until then. I was now able to understand my bad shots and rectify. Two lessons start of 2014 on short game/wedges. huge improvement after this, knowing your distances and different flights paths from 130 yards in saved me several shots over the year, and confidence grew when looking at the target.

    4. I practice by playing, always have. I have tried the traditional practice and find it boring, I am a little ill disciplined and wont stick to practicing the one shot. Finding yourself on different lies, different parts of the course ,different conditions, that's what improves me.
I play twice a week. one midweek round and one weekend round, with work and the wife its all im allowed now, I would play more if possible. In 2013 I was in a fulltime masters course, I played about 5 competitons a week during the summer, saw huge improvement (12 down to 6). Don't tell the wife but it was the best summer ever, weather was great and I had a couple of unemployed buddies to play comps with all over leinster, any day of the week.

    5. coming down too quick can definitely make you irritable with golf. You were so used to shooting high scores as you burned through your handicap that youre shocked when you struggle to shoot your handicap now. I never fell out of love though, im a stubborn whore, i just get back on the tee and keep playing til it feels good again to compete.

    6. to enjoy golf, to go to any club and be able to shoot par for the course has always been my goal and still is. i would like to be more consistent through the year, my variables are quite far apart, this has to change.

    7. as above. would also like to win the captains some year. i hope to compete in the business end of a few junior scratch cups this year, played them for the first time last year and enjoyed them, sharpens your game.

    8. i won a medal once in my old club, loved that. finished a round once with birdie, par, eagle to pick up 5 euro off each of the boys ( i was 5 points behind with 3 to play) and the bragging rights!

    9. being low and staying low is a motivation for me, i cant speak for other low lads but theres no pressure or image to it. Im just a needle in a haystack of class 1 golfers. best advice i ever got off a low guy 'if you shoot two under and win the weekly comp or if you shoot 10 over in the same comp, nobody cares either way but you'. agreed. amateur golfers expect to much.

    10. i carry a bag in winter just, to save energy and its convenient. equipment is important to me, im not a big tech head but i would be lost without my garmin gps. having good balls always is important. i am sometimes amazed at people shouting 'bite' at a callaway warbird coming into a green, better chance of stopping a concorde. good balls make a huge difference.

    11. short game, wedge control. cant overstate it enough. if youre hitting close to the target every time birdies will roll in.

Well done Fix, a novel idea.
Im usually uncomfortable about answering these types of questions as people can develop an opinion of you based on the answers, however Boards is a better place these days so below are some answers, feel free to ask me to elaborate on any if needed.

    1) How long are you playing , what is your lowest handicap, how did you start to play ?

I'm playing 28 years, i started in Bodenstown as a 7yr old with my brother who is now married to one of the owners daughters. He would take me there the odd weekend and summer evenings, drop me off to go play while he visited the GF, you don't see many 7/8 yr olds out on a course on their own anymore.
My lowest hcap ive been to is -3.1, im currently -2.5.

    2) What is your lowest score over/under par ?

My lowest score in competition is 64 -8 in bodenstown years ago before it got ruined, Ive had other rounds over the years im v proud of though, 66 in Lucan as a 17yr old, 69 in European club same year, 65 in carlow scratch cup, and 67 in castletroy a few years ago.
I was -8 thru 10 holes in Killeen one time but genuinely got thoughts of the 59 and shot 67.....

    3) How much lessons have you had - did you even stick with a coach - how did you make that big breakthrough ?

Early days while improving i didn't take much lessons, though around 12yr old i got selected for GUI coaching by David Kinsella at weekend sessions which improved my basics. The only coach ive stuck to is Fred Twomey in Cork since 2006. He was responsible for me getting to another level regarding playing for ireland etc. In 2009 we sat down and looked at why id stood still for a few years, yes id won tournaments and played Interprovincials but there was something missing. We took a huge amount of stats for that year and looked at them in late 2009, it was obvious i was too one dimensional as i hit everything right to left, so was missing a lot of shots to the right under pressure (a result of not releasing the club).
We set about trying to neutralise my ball flight that winter, 2010 was a disaster golf wise.... no wins, didn't contend in any c ships but my ball was behaving so we stuck with it.
Then 2011 it just clicked, i was hitting the ball both ways at ease, i was also fitter that year more than any. My worst finish in any event that whole year was 7th, was unbeaten in Home internationals and Interprovincials- It was a year of such high confidence i genuinely felt unbeatable. So Fred Twomey basically turned me into the player i wanted to be.

    4) How much do you honestly practice and play - what did it take ?

Nowadays, wintertime its one game a week no practice, summertime its couple evenings a week and then usually there's scratch cups, championships to play so hard to put a number on it. In say 2011/2012 when ni was basically full time, it was every day, id usually rather play 9h with 2 or 3 balls instead of hitting balls.

    5) Did the practice and getting low make you fall out of love with the game or are you still in love with it ?

As i was quite good at a young age i suppose i loved it then, but in recent years i love the competition and competitiveness more than the game itself. But ill always love golf, its impossible not to, every time you play its totally different to the last time.

    6) What was / is your motivation in the past or future ?

Well my motivation these days is taken up with a 2yr old, and both myself and my wife works full time so time management is tough, future motivation is to get fitter and try maintain my ability as long as i can, im 35 so i see myself as having 15 years to see how good i can get and whether i could justify turning pro then and trying the seniors tour.

    7) Have you any more major goals ?
Id like to try seniors tour as i said, but its not life or death tbh.
i wont reveal any other goals tbh.

    8) What is your greatest achievement ?
Tough one here, ive been very lucky to have won some great tournaments, ive played for Leinster, Munster, Ireland at all levels but id say now having thought about it, winning the Barton Shield all ireland in September with Muskerry is the best. Provincial and national teams are usually selected as a result of good golf, and teams of players are assembled, but a club team is usually made up of a bunch of good mates (ours is anyway) and theirs no individual motivation, its all about winning as a team. It can be harder to win in that environment as your pulling so hard for the club/friends and certainly ive never felt nerves like it playing the 18th in the final. The club waited 61 years since the last win, and my playing partner has played for the club for 22 years without winning anything, you cant beat that stuff i think.

    9) Is being low , and staying low a pressure , is there an image issue with it ? Have you seen lads try to stay too low ?

I suppose it is a pressure, id be aware of peoples perception of low hcappers. There is a stigma that low guys are aholes that only play with other low guys, and yes there is a good chunk of them that are! But id advise people to judge people on people not on abilities.
Plenty of lads will do ANYTHING to try stay low, and ive seen it with my own eyes unfortunately. There is an assumption of low guys never handing in their bad scores, this is an old wives tale, if i don't hand in an 80, i still get .1 back!!
Theres the other issue of the "club legend" whos always swanned around the club, picking off the women on the mixed one by one, off scratch, never plays cships for fear of people seeing the results. Then as they get older they cant maintaion their hcap and the ego takes a big hit, this is the root of all low hcap evil imho.

    10) Do you carry your bag, is the equipment thing a load of golf balls
I carry in the winter, and if im going out for 9h in summer, otherwise its tour bag and powakaddy.
The equipment thing is crucial for the survival of golf, theres so many people that couldnt play at all without the help of modern equipment. I know for sure id be struggling without the help of good equipment and being fitted properly!

    11) If you could only pick one thing that you worked on, that made the biggest difference to your game, what would it be ?
    A routine.
Nothing is more important in the game, especially under pressure.

Can absolutely relate to these points

All I can say is - I now can't wait to answer my own questions :D

You know what , they are not as odd as we expected these lads :) , the same desires as ourselves. Most golfers I ever played with, particularly on boards here, has a desire to improve, to have that great round. I've seen reactions in people after their best round, that it was such a buzz a high for them to play that well - i've seen this in golfers at every level.

The goodwill on the thread is the most satisfying aspect for me.

I had a thing in my head, that the so called negative vibes towards low players , didn't feel right.

Because, every time I played with a low player, after having a chat with the higher handicap lads about it (with low guy gone), they would just say things like

    "pure class"
    "A joy to watch"
    "A pleasure to see"
    "another level"
    "amazing to see"
    "legend golfer"

Yes - I won't be naive - Gorfield has said it, at a certain level in every sport, some will have to have that killer instinct, the will to win , or that edge. Is that a good or a bad thing ? Does it make the person - I don't think so.

Have to say -- have found the thread very motivating. Trying everything to get there is not as lonely as it felt.

The only problem with golf - when you get there , there is somewhere else to go. :D

Possible question......best tip you ever got ?....you'd see pros asked that a good bit.

Head down - swing easy ? ;) - Probably the best piece of advice I ever got and still the thing I find hardest to do.
And one other question for now...

If you could only pick one thing that you worked on that made the biggest difference to your game what would it be?

    when I was a kid - Chipping

and then spending hours and hours on the chipping green with my friends having competitions against each other when we were kids. Makes you unreal at chipping and it's a great base to start from. I've a decent short game now, but it's nowhere near as good as when I was a kid. It was the base to the rest of my game though. If I still had my short game from when I was 15 years of age, I'd be very close to scratch I reckon!

I wonder how many of the lower guys have been fitted?

I got my irons fitted 5-6 years ago when I was playing off 5. Before that I had never gotten any kind of custom fitting. I havent had any since and still use the same driver I've used for the past 10 years. Custom fitting is nowhere near as necessary as getting a good pro and some decent lessons. I'd only advise people to get a custom fitting if they ::

a.) Got their swing to a place they really wanted it

    or

b.) Were less than 5 feet tall, or greater than 6'4". Where less/extra length in the clubs and different lies and loft would be advisable.

For any further club purchases I make though from now on, I will go custom fit, but that's because I feel my swing matches criteria (a) ;)

I was wondering if any of the low guys could throw a few numbers at us?

Everyone assumes low handicap guys are long hitters etc. Could be interesting to compare.

Maybe average summer conditions driving distance, some iron distances and so on.

Maybe putts per round average. Even preferred shot shape.

Super thread as well, just an appreciation for good golf!

you definitely don't need to be very long to be off 5 anyways. I clip the ball a nice distance, but most of my fellow 5 handicappers in Athlone hit the ball well outside me

Distances in yards :: ( very much approximations )

    Club|Distance
    Driver|255|
    5 Wood|225|
    3 Iron|210|
    4 Iron|195|
    5 Iron|180|
    6 Iron|170|
    7 iron|160|
    8 Iron|150|
    9 Iron|135|
    P Wed|120|
    54*|90|
    60*|60|

Putts per round Average - probably around 30

Preferred shot shape is to hit it dead straight, but I can get a draw going if I want 95% of the time. A fade, not so much and only with certain clubs

    P Wed|120|

good to see the 54/60 degree distances. I would be very similar. I would never attempt to hit the 54 more than 90/95 and the 60 65/70 yards. I have played with lots of guys who hit/try 100 plus with these clubs by munching them. I always taught my swing path only allowed me to cover these distances but they are a finesse club and should not be used to cover 100 plus yards, but to come in high from close range for more control and spin.
I went through a period of trying to match these guys but bladed a lot of gaps trying to force the distance. let the club do the work now helps me big time and this was a massive improvement to my game.:p

    Low Scores (Bad days)

Lads I'm bumping this thread again - On new ground with my game at present - so face some new issues. That I am very very happy to face.

Wanted to explore, with the low guys here (5 and lower) - how they deal with above. Not even playing crap, but say early on in a round you start poor - what is the psychology of this situation for you - say you are 5 over after 7.

Do you know, you can go rest of the round par - or does low handicap panic set in - "I've used my shots up".

Or you feel - you can make that 10 % + birdies a round (2 or more) to recover.

Or perhaps - you do find the margins very tight on a low handicap - the margins are smaller - you are meant to be able to deal with it - and you don't get doubles early on ?

    Short Game

I'm at a stage - I can't move my long game on any more - and over last few months worked on wedges and putting (with mixed to poor results)

How long do you spend on your short game and putting this time of the year ?

Is a laser a must at this level and for practice ?
