    Hi there,

Sister in law is widowed, 2 kids, one 12, one 19.

She got a cert with the following reduced credits :

    personal 2190 + paye 1650 - survivor pension contribution 2632 = 1207

    20% band has therefore been reduced to 33,800 - (2632*5) =20636

therefore weekly tax credit is only 1208/52 = 23

Is there any way we can improve this situation ?

    Thanks.

    Hi

Sorry for the late post, a friend of mine is in the same boat albeit a year later. I have searched the tax forums and have seen no mention of this adjustment, did you get any further with this?

Sounds like she wasn't paying tax on the widowed pension since she started to receive it (it is paid by Dept of Social Protection but it is taxable) and her tax credits have subsequently been reduced by Revenue to collect the tax due.

So revenue reduced this years tax credits to collect the previous years shortfall?

If thats so then its a pity they hadnt the cop on to tell her that when she phoned them.

Does this mean the credits will be reduced until the back tax is all collected?
