Yep. You heard correctly, they are going to remake John Carpenters cult classic.

Not sure how I feel about this, I liked the Trek reboot, disliked Robocop, hmmmm.

I would much prefer an escape from earth with Kurt Russell I think this reboot would be a total recall level mess, Trek to me is not a reboot though it doesn't erase what came before

I can already see Jai Courtney putting on an eye patch... and it upsets me.

Idris Elba or Samuel l Jackson would be front runners in my eye but I don't want a reboot

Yet another John Carpenter remake; that man's back catalogue sure is getting pilfered, I wonder how he feels about it: Halloween, The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13, The Thing (ok, the 2011 was a prequel but it was pretty clear the studio forced it into a remake), and now this.

I'd get irate about this news, but what's the point? If it gets made, it'll have all the joy sucked out of it, some charisma-vacuum like the aforementioned Jai Courtney will star, it'll have a PG-13 rating slapped onto it and will do modest business. A re-release of the original on home formats will probably do OK as well. All in time for the next cult classic to have its guts removed and some lipstick slathered over its face.

Gosh, the forum can bring you great news such as avatar being delayed and then slap you in the face with a fish called remake of your favourite movies.
Escape from LA was poor enough and I'm not holding out much hope for this one at all.

There must be a factory in Australia that produces these bland beefcakes that are designed to show up in multiple popular franchises.

It could be good. I'll reserve judgement on it. I thought the Robocop remake was good fun, if lacking what made the original a classic. If they can do something similar, I'll be happy.

I think what make robocop somewhat passable was they did not copy pretty much anything it never tried to be like the original, if they tried to reboot it like a copy of the first one it would have been awful but it might just have been it was better then the sequels so I gave it more slack.

Yeah, they could make a really clever and fun film if they make an effort. It's just the problem of getting them to actually make the effort that's the problem. We can hope!

Ah for ****s sake...leave well alone. Whatever about how crappy the actual direction, script, sets, CGI special effects and music will be they will never assemble a cast of character actors to come close to the original.

I'd say in one way he isn't happy about it and in another way he is probably making more money form the remakes than he ever did from the originals which is always a good thing.

What till someone decides its time for a 150m dollar Dark Star :(

That's it, I'm moving to LA. It's obvious that the Hollywood machine will hire absolutely anybody; talentless, soulless yes-men, bereft of any individual creativity or originality....

I can be one of those talentless, soulless yes-men!!

Samuel L is way too old and already rocked the eye patch

He has the presence to be able to play that kinda character

Yeah but you could get the 3 year younger Kurt Russell if you are going that route

They want a full reboot reusing russell would just confuse things, wasn't escape from la planned as a soft reboot too.

I agree but what is the point of getting Samuel L if you are trying a reboot. at 66 he would be over 70 for any sequel

Anyway, let's agree that it should just be left alone

They should get no one because this shouldn't happen. This doesn't surprise me, given that almost all his movies have been remade. EFNY is fantastic, I even like EFLA. They are what they are.

Jai Courtney gets a lot of criticism but when he gets a decent script to work with he's a damn good actor. His performance in Felony is damn good and he really impresses.

I think this could be good fun if it's treated right - and it could be, to be fair last years Robocop was a good indication of how a re-boot or remake can add rather than detract from a franchise.

    Not shooting it down instantly.

This is one of the few remakes I had actually hoped for.......Any ideas whos gonna direct? I think Paul Greengrass would do an amazing job. Either Greengrass or chris nolan. Surely this is a role Hugh Jackman was born to play........

    my feeling too.

i really liked the robocop film and felt it was so different from the original that it could sit quite happily next to it on a shelf without being redundant.

EFNY is an oul favourite of mine but effects have come miles since then so visually alone theres scope to be inventive. i'd love to see a far more expanded view of prison camp new york and with the advances in technology since the 80s theres loads of things they can mess about with to take a canabalised twisted view on.

the casting will be fun though !

To paraphrase Snake: "I don't give a **** about your remake!"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,812 ✭✭✭FortuneChip

I think the idea could work, I just don't get why it has to be a reboot. Why not just have a similarly themed set-up. Calling it EFNY is hardly gonna be that big a sales pitch.
Lockout MS was pretty much Escape From Space with Guy Pearce reading Snake's lines (minus the appearance).

Just hope if it goes ahead they cast Snake well. Michael Shannon's got a good look. Garret Dillahunt could grow his hair a little, he's a bit weird looking too.

    I actually liked Lockout

Oh exactly. I say it was similar as a positive thing. It didn't try too hard to be anything other thqn entertaining and was successful mainly due to Guy Pearce. He really nailed the gruff, sarcastic anti-hero. The intro scene with the credits is brilliant.
Not suggesting he be Snake, that's just lazy.

Lockout is a fantastic B-movie, a real gem most people will probably find either by accident or word of mouth: but it's also everything the Escape from New York probably won't be. Lockout was an unknown quantity with low expectations and those backing the film were probably happy to let the production team do their thing. If it was a hit, happy days, if not, no great loss. There was little riding on it so it was likely those at the coalface were just left alone. The end result had plenty of flaws, but its sense of sarcastic fun felt pretty organic and natural - particularly Pearce's performance. I could be completely off-base of course, but that's how it felt looking in from the outside.

Something like an Escape from New York remake is, from the ground up, an exercise in re-branding and rebooting. It's creatively bankrupt from the get-go (not suggesting Lockout is some artistic masterpiece mind you) because it's not trying to be a fun slice of entertainment; it wants to cash in on a name, a sense of nostalgia or curiosity built from an existing quantity, however obscure it might be to the common punter. Its perspective starts from the marketing department, and that just means there's a greater risk that the end product will lack the soul of coincidence and raw energy something like Lockout managed. There's more riding on a production like this reboot, so fewer chances will (likely!) be taken in the scripting, the casting, the plotting, etc. etc.

I'm starting to think the film going public must largely be made up of mindless robots.

This will undoubtedly make its budget back and we'll be "treated" to a couple of sequels. Really miss big films with original plots.

We'll take this good film and make a crappy modern version which will bring in a pile of cash.

Guy Pearce already played a similar character in Lookout as FortuneChip mentioned in his post previously

I think Karl Urban or Eric Bana could be good
