Another handicap question

I have just returned home to Ireland after nearly 4 years abroad. Before I left I cancelled my membership at my local golf club and I haven't been a member since. At the time of leaving my handicap was 5.5

Basically what is/will or could be my handicap when I get to rejoin a club in the next month or two depending on finding a job?
Since being away I have played about 8 rounds of golf and I can't say I was any bit decent.
Is it possible to ask for shot backs or do I just do the three card rule?

    Thanks in advance
Also great to see how the society has gone since I left.

3 cards plus add the information regarding previous h/cap so club can also take that into account

I was in a similar boat, took 6 years out of the game when I was off 16, 3 cards for new handicap and was given 18

If you played of 6 before. It should only take you a few weeks really to get back into the swing of things, probably bit longer the way the weather is at the moment.

I found from a lengthy lay off that I hit the ball near enough to what I would when playing well but my short game was effected most.

Personally I cant see you getting anymore than 1 shot back if your lucky

Cheers for all the replies people.

Presumed it was the 3 card rule alright.

It was a dream to be wishing for a couple of shots back :)

I'd be very surprised if you got a hcp of more than 6, 4 years is a long time but you were obviously well above the average player in terms of ability and so that won't take long to come back.
You may deserve more than 6 but handicap Secretary's normally air on the cautious side.

Again this is another reason you should have a GUI number for life not just while you are at a club. Nothing to stop anyone just getting 3 cards signed there is no way to tell if they held a handicap previously. If Luckygent wanted he could shoot 3 rounds in the 90's get 18 and be a great man for some team events :).

Haha, I won't be doing anything like that anyway and Wouldn't be the biggest fan of those type of people even if a few of my main golfing buddies should be a shot or two lower.
I can't delibrately play crap. It's just not in my nature, I'm way too competitive.

Sorry didn't think you would. Just a bit sore about this as i got beaten by a guy in a match play that was off 4 had given up his membership for a couple of years, got 12 when he came back and beat me by 5&4 and i played better than my handicap of 11.
