Is the standard of sports journalism slowly improving?

At the top of my head I can think of present stand out sports journalists who were never professional/at a high level in a sport, like Eoin McDevitt, Miguel Delaney and Malachy Clerkin.

There are other guys who went the other route from the top of their sport to sports journalist/or at least write articles that attract interest like Paul Kimmage, Richard Sadlier, Nicholas Roche and Joe Brolly (Brolly purely for the WUM factor).

Has the day finally passed where the public are not treated like eejits with awful puns/cliches and told the bleeding obvious when it comes to a sports article?

Have we finally reached an era where in depth/quirky sports articles are becoming more of the norm?

There might even be one or two more Con Houlihan's in the future!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.
