Rome Recommendations - 6 Nations

    Hi everyone,

My dad managed to get us tickets to the Ireland v Italy game next month :D
I booked flights going Thurs-Sun. I've never been to Rome so I'm seeking advice on where to stay that's handy for both the Stadium and the main attractions. The stadium looks slightly north of the city centre on maps so not sure where is best to stay for transport, good pubs for before/after the game, decent restaurants.

We only really have a day and a half for sightseeing so can anyone recommend must-see attractions? I'd prefer to avoid queues etc. due to our limited time so probably the big museums/galleries are not an option. Also, my Dad has a dodgy knee and is in his 60s so he can't walk too far but he has never been to Rome either.

(Flying into Fiumicino if that makes a difference)

Any tips greatly appreciated! Cheers :)

Probably won't be a lot of help here but heading over for the match also, Thurs - Sun, have been in Rome before but about ten years ago, we picked a hotel reasonably close to Termini train station on Via Nazionale (Repubblica metro close by for getting around) as that's where the bus from Fiumicino will drop us

The closest metro to the Stadium AFAIK is Lepanto, still a few km's away on foot though so may have to research the bus if walking is an issue though

I'd stay pretty central & just head out for the game & then back in, better to be in the middle of stuff like Piazza Navona & Piazza della Rotonda, Colosseum, St Peters Square etc than out by the stadium where maybe not much happening

If you can't do too much walking, then stay central, but pick a place in a good location near main sites and a bit away from Termini, which can be scruffy/dodgy and may not always offer the best accomodation value.

This is probably out, therefore, but consider staying in Trastevere, which is well-serviced by buses, trains and trams. It's one of the few places in Rome with decent nightlife. I don't mean clubbing. I just mean, decent places with a bit of atmosphere. Much of Rome is dead at night.

I would recommend the River Palace Hotel on via Flamini. I stayed there in 2009 for the 6N game. It can be a bit pricey but we managed to get a very good deal for a few nights.

"The River Palace is just 5 minutes' walk from the famous Piazza del Popolo, and from Flaminio Metro Station" Its handy to get to via the metro and is central enough to explore the city. Its about a 20/25min walk to the Stadio Olimipico. it was only 10 mins from Stadio Fluminio which was great

There area so many must sees in Rome. The Vatican (St. Peters), the coliseum, trevi fountain, pantheon, Spanish steps, piazaa navonna would be some of my favourites. I've been there a few times and love the city. One of my friends is a roman and one hell of a tour guide!!!

After the game there are loads of bars, the Irish ones would probably have the best atmosphere at game time. Take your pick I'd say.

+1 for Trastevere. Myself and the wife stayed in the B&B Roma Hotel, close to Trastevere Station, late last year. The number 8 tram stops right outside the hotel, and runs up the Viale di Trastevere into the centre. The 280 bus runs up the quays in the direction of the Stadio.
A Euro1.70 bigliete (ticket) gives you 90 minutes of integrated travel, i.e tram, bus, and metro.
The B&B Roma is showing Euro200 for a twin room for those dates, on Alpharooms.com.
Trastevere Station is on the regionale (local) line which runs from the airport (NOT the Leonardo express) and the train fare is Euro8.
