Rugby Photo's for C&C

I popped down to a local rugby county derby between Portarlington and Portlaoise last sunday to try my hand at taking some photo's. The light was not great and I was using iso 1000 and 1250 in shutter priority mode 1/1000" and getting an aperture of f4 most of the time. These are some of my efforts if any of the real sports photographers or anybody else for that matter would like to offer some C&C and a few hints.

I'm no expert but these are pretty good.

I've looked into how to do sports photograhy (with the idea of getting into it). As far as I can see the important things are - get close in, include the ball but most important as far as I can see is get facial expressions.

You've ticked all those boxes so well done!!!

First one is nice and sharp with timing bang on when the try is scored. Only gripe is you're a tad too high and looking down on the try.

Second one is an attempted hand off with no real "action" in it. Too much open dead space in the photo the 3 players to the right are also not needed.

Third, again you're high it's also sharp with a decent crop. If you had 10-12 fps it might be worth seeing what's in the following frame with the tackle.

Last one is fine, no real issues with that one.

Overall a very good effort, you might see me refereeing up there in the Leinster League. I've had 2 photographers in my last game and had a quick chat with both to see how they were getting on.

Actually, I'd be inclined to crop a wee bit tighter on #2 and #4 also (as below). But very nice shots. All I ever seem to get is the backs of heads and that glorious split second after the action! :P

1 & 4 look like excellent efforts. 4 looks like its half a second late and a shot a little earlier would have captured the action better, but thats a small criticism.

They are sharp where it counts, exposed well, noise looks well controlled and they are not overbaked, i.e. they look natural.

Id count that outing as a success.

I'd crop 2 and 3 a bit more but that's being critical for the sake of criticism. Id say all these images are extremely well captured shots with great capturing of expression

I think they're grand, nothing exceptional.
You need to become more aware of your positioning, where the action is going to play out & what's in the background before I press the button.

Well done for first attempt. I have found Rugby not the easiest game to photograph and it took me a while to nail a couple of half decent shots.

Cropping is the only real issue above and the point of view , get down low. Would also agree re shot #2 what is in the next frame or two, the impact of the hand off. Well done
