SUSI Grant enquiry

I just have a question in relation to the SUSI student grant.

I am currently doing a Level 8 course and I am receiving a grant but I am unsure whether I want to do this course. I am thinking of leaving the course and applying for a Level 7 course next year. I am just wondering if I would be eligible for a SUSI grant or not.

    Thanks

I dropped out of college in early December from my first year in a level 8 Bachelor of Science degree. I can only tell you what I was told when I withdrew from my course. Supposing you drop out now, you will get a grant next year but minus what you've already received. So if you're getting a €5,900 grant and you've already been given three instalments of €650, you will get €1,950 less next year. Also, you will have to pay the €2,750 in full next year when you go back due to you dropping out in second semester. Because I dropped out in the first semester, I will have to pay half of the €2,750 - but that's not all. Those 'free tuition fees' that the government pay, you will have to pay that next year in full. For example, my course cost in and around €7,000 so because I dropped out in first semester, next year I will have to pay half of this amount - €3,500. To the best of my knowledge you have to pay the full amount once you enter into semester two but I would double check this if I were you. It's not the best of news - that's for sure. But if you're very unhappy in your course I think it's best to follow your gut. Hope this helps and that I've told you 99% the truth. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

Is your Level 7 course in a similar area to the Level 8 you are currently attending?

If so, you could look into the possibility of completing the year and requesting direct transfer to year 2 of the Level 7. Provided you are progressing in the same area and progressing year-wise, AFAIK your grant would remain unaffected.

The above doesn't hold if you are switching study area completely (e.g. Science to Arts) or are unable to enter year 2 directly on the strength of exams completed.
