Hi Guys. First a bit of background. Running two and a half years injury free, 2 half marathons under the belt and 3 upcoming half marathons in March, April & June. I have a chance of doing the NYC Marathon this year for charity. It will be my first marathon, so my question.........Am I insane taking on NYC as a first and would I be best off doing Dublin? If I train slowly and sensibly over the next 10 months and go to NYC with the intention of forgetting about time, starting in one piece and finishing in good condition. Just use a get around the 26 miles strategy and enjoy the trip and opportunity of a lifetime? Advice appreciated.

If you train properly then any marathon will be a great experience. In terms of an overall packaged experience for a marathon, then New York is as good as it gets. No matter what marathon you do 26.2 miles is tough, New York is no different from Dublin. Pluses and minuses in them all. Crowds are indescribable in NY, but you might have family in Dublin, some sections are hard in NY, but just the same in Dublin. I think the advantage is that the trip , once you get on that plane , is all about the marathon, whereas if you are in Dublin, it can be a long wait till the Monday . Go for it , you will love NY. It's the best marathon for support.

Did it as my first marathon in 2000. Was an awesome experience - the crowds were superb, the route is excellent and it is a great trip. Loved every minute of it. The international run from the UN to Central Park the day before is good fun also (if it is still going on). it did take me 13 years to run my next marathon after it though!!
