can anyone tell me how i can configure the HG658c to use the gigabit wan port? have the router connected to a SamKnows TP-Link N600 what has all gigabit ports so it makes no sense to me to be using the slower ethernet ports on the back of the router

I don't think you can with the VF firmware.
You might need to install the O2 firmware to do it [ never done it myself but seen as I have the same set up as you, I might give it a go ]

    Maybe Dermot can help ...

If the samnknows is just acting as passthrough (as in your still part of the trial and havent flashed it) then you can connect it to any of lan 1-4 at gigE.

i have the samknows connected up to to port 1 on the hg685c, port 1-4 on the hg685c are not gigabit, only the wan port is from what i remember, thats why i wanted know about the wan and how to config it

at the min its port one of hg685c to wan on samknows tp-link n600, then i have a ripe probe powered by usb on port one , port 2/3 is bedrooms and 4 is sitting room on the n600

see ive just rewired my house with cat6e and shielded rj45's so want to take advantage of everything i can

Ahh ok, I thought the 658 was the reverse, 1x FastEth, 4xGigE. Above FW fix appears right so.

now the main things is figuring out how to use the unlocked one as my main router to handle the line in from cab, then ill set up the wan as ethernet.

is it also normal for a vodafone router to reset once every night between the hours of 1-4am? its starting to get quite annoying

Reset as in reboot or lose sync? Any decent kit should have an uptime of weeks without any sort of interrupt. And Huawei tend to make decent stuff.

full reset every night, disconnects dsl then reconnects, takes around a min or two

heres line stats, i reset the router when i finished wiring up my new cat6e cables. would you say it would make much of a diff if i rewired from the ntu to the termination point out by my esb and gas box with cat6e? its standard 2 core phone at the min

But the unit doesnt reboot? Sounds like you're describing a port reset, when the DSLAM will drop the link and start a fresh sync broker(flashing DSL light).

Stats are fine. If it were a programmed re-link you'd see it at the same time nightly, its certainly not the norm for VDSL. BT used to reset all connections at a PPPoE level at like 1AM nightly back 5 years ago, but on IPoE I doubt thats happening.

You'd need access to the diagnostic logs really to see why the link goes down, generic firmware should let you do that.

Regarding the cable, I wouldnt bother unless its particularly bad, remember its in a bundle of basic twisted pairs all the way back to the cab anyways.

ive just looked thru the diff options for logs on the router, all it really shows is teh dates ive logged into the router and dates from 2010?

To my knowledge, the reset is expected [ DHCP lease renewal ]
If not , then I also have a problem :-p

Can any other vodafone customers confirm they see it too?

    Dunno why they'd bother.

I have adsl from Vodafone with the same setup as the op. The connection stays up unless I reset it. My mother has vdsl so I'll check that in a few hours.

That used to be a massive issue with Vodafone a couple of years ago. AFAIK VF have a few different IP pools from a couple of different radius servers and the issue wasn't common across all. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing still happens a few pools, especially if ye're all on dynamic IPs.

Also, VF don't use IPoE, they're using PPPoE.

EDIT: also, back to the original query - nope, the WAN port isn't usable even with unlocked firmware. There may be a way to modify firmware to use the port, but I haven't seen anything obvious (or easy!) online to suggest such.

Yea, they set a DHCP lease of 24 hours.
I made the effort to get up at 5am and power cycle a few weeks ago so I rarely notice the drop now.
