UPC Horizon Broadband Speed |Issue

I am using UPC Horizon Box and noticed today that my broadband speed was very slow. I ran some tests on speedtest.net and got 118 on Ethernet cable and only 42 on Wi-Fi. Also got 40 on my smartphone.

I called UPC and they told me that I should be getting in the region of 200 on Ethernet connection and that they would do a "factory reset" on the modem. When I asked them what about Wi-Fi, I was told 40-50.

Is this just that their Wi-Fi unit in the Horizon box is crap, or would I only get that speed even if I bought my own router.

Yes, the wifi on UPC's modems including Horizon is pretty poor.

The solution that most people go with is to add their own high quality wifi router to the UPC modems and use that instead.

    Thanks BK,

Can you give some guidance as to what I might expect from Wi-Fi, as distinct from an ethernet cable connection e.g. 85%.

Also, any ideas as to a really good Wi-Fi router that I can buy?

    I've UPC 240mb/s

With Ethernet I get slightly more then 240mb/s

With the UPC wifi router I get about 60 to 80mb/s in the same room.

With my own high quality wifi router, I get 200mb/s in the same room using 802.11n on the 5GHz frequency.

Note that wifi speeds will fall the further you get from the wifi router.

My router is one of the best on the market, Archer C7:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-AC1750-Wireless-Gigabit-1300Mbps/dp/B00CEB53MS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421092277&sr=8-1&keywords=archer+c7

If that is a bit too steep for you, I've also heard good thing in another thread about the Archer C3, but I haven't seen reviews for it yet and obviously it is a lower spec then the C3
