Blocking off Chimney.

Hi there just looking for advice before I go ahead with this..

I have a couple of fireplaces in opposing rooms that share the same chimney pot and I want to block off the chimney pot... With the way the house was built it is very easy to access the roof chimney as there is a balcony right beside it, so I want to block it on the roof as opposed to blocking two fireplaces.

I was gonna follow this guy instructions, as I dont plan on using the chimney for at least a couple of years and I would like an airtight seal... Does anybody have any opinions on this before I go ahead and do it? or is there a better way..

    thanks,
    J

jury is out on if it is a good idea to 100% seal it off, maybe look at the ideas on top cap dot i.e.

Yeah I had a look at them and they seem the right idea alright.. I might try and make something myself....

I presume there is an advantage in blocking off closer to the bottom, rather than having all that cold air in the chimney coming back down in to the room....

Yeah, my old man was talking about those when we first discussed blocking off the chimney.. But he says they keep deflating on him and not blocking anything at all...

There's a chimney plug available in builders providers - terra cotta yoke that just drops into the chimney pot-

I've tried the balloons, they're not great. Still allow significant drafts.

I know I saw it in cork builders providers, pretty sure I saw in Chadwick's as well .
Probably better to try a large builders providers rather than a DIY chain -

I've been looking at blocking one too, if you want to leave the option open to ventilate/not ventilate you could use a capping cowl that leaves the option open to to ventilate/not (there's a youtube video on that). Sorry I can't post a link to the video or where to get one because of boards' stupid restriction on infrequent/new users posting links (there's got to be a better way of controlling spam). Anyway easy to find with a quick Google.
