200GB Monthly Allowance =

    Hi all

    I currently have Sky but I'm thinking of getting rid, getting satellite broadband and using this for my TV needs!

    A local company offers 8mps download and 2mps upload with a monthly allowance of 200GB. Now I have no idea what this allowance would give me. I know it's dependant on a few different factors but generally I would only be watching tv/films and general internet usage. I am not a gamer so this isn't an issue.

    Would 200GB be restrictive over a month?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Check your stats with sky.

    That'll give you an idea of what you're currently using.


    BTW it sounds like you're talking about Fixed Wireless not Satellite. Be careful as if they oversell a mast your speeds can nosedive, so make sure its up to scratch before you lock into a contract.

    I don't currently have Sky Boradband, just the tv package. So that's why I'm wondering about the usage and what 200gb would give me if I went down that route. The plan would be to have non subscription tv!

    Depends on what you're watching.
    Watching Netflix uses about 1 GB of data per hour for each stream of standard definition video, and up to 3 GB per hour for each stream of HD video. This can create headaches for Netflix members that have a monthly bandwidth or data cap on their Internet service.

    Thats a good benchmark. Youtube will use slightly less.

    Now you have to work out how many hours you watch per day or per week. Thats the trick.

    It would depend on your normal usage. As outlined above netflix etc will take a good chunk out of your allowance, as will online gaming, downloading for example.

    I just logged in to my router to check,
    Session Time 14days 14h:54m:49s
    Session Data Downloaded 356GB 657MB
    if I had that allowance I would be *slightly* over and still half the month to go :D
