Data Protection - Does my mother have a case?

    Hello,

Our story is long winded so I will keep it as short and swift as possible:

It begins with my mother receiving documentation by post from an organization. Correspondences received were addressed to regular business individuals and also individuals within the public domain. The latter was odd as the people the letters were addressed to would not be living in the suburb I grew up in so somebody must have known the address was completely incorrect.

This went on for years and my mother would call them and they would tell her to destroy them.

I got a bit peeved with it and made a complaint and we were told it wouldn't happen again and they offered a small gesture.

However, the documents continued to come through the door. We threatened to contact the media and this seemed to put the wind up their sails. We were then formally asked to return any documentation we had. I told my mother not too.

Low and behold my mothers house was broken into and the documentation was stolen. Her jewellery etc. was not touched. Of course we have no proof to put 2 and 2 together.

Does my mother have any case against X organization?

There were other oddities which I am apprehensive of mentioning for obvious reasons.

    What?

    Try again.

You think an unnamed organisation broke into your mothers home to steal letters not addressed to her that you refused to return because they were afraid you would complain to the data protection office who would hand down no sanction for misaddressed letters.

    Hi,

There were other indiscretions which I cannot mention for obvious reasons.

Should the individuals whom the documentation was addressed to be informed or should we leave well enough alone? Said documents carried serious data.

The organisation is well known. I obviously cannot mention who they are on here.

Thats a hell of a story if its all on the level why not contact them but say they were stolen but don't worry you had copied them and see what they have to say or that you received more. At the very least you should be going to the guards about it or have you already, I assume you reported the break in and also talk to a solicitor.

    Hi Salmocab,

Yes, Guards were called and finger prints were taken etc. A solicitor was called and our story was believed. However, we were told to leave well enough alone . . .

I take your other points on board.

You need to get out of the house. There is no time to discuss this.

Delighted to have facilitated everyone with a laugh. Joking aside everything I have said above is accurate but what does that matter.

I would like if this thread was closed please.

Wait till the letters arrive again, and "Go Public" on it.
