Does "Public Relations Officer" in university count as work experience?

I feel like I'm an awful eejit for asking this question but I might as well be sure.

I had a role of Public Relations Officer in college (unpaid) for a society there - can I put that down as work experience on a resume/CV, or would that be pushing it?

I had a fair few responsibilities, but I don't know if it falls under the rubric of "work".

I would certainly put it down. Many people have volunteer work down on a CV / application these days. If you can show that you gained skills from the position and are able to demonstrate how those skills are relevant to a job you are applying for then there is no reason it shouldn't be there.

    Sure, why not!

Then yes, absolutely put it down. Just think of ways you can tie what you did as PR officer to whatever you're applying for, make it relevant.

    Put it down under work/voluntary.
