Does anyone know if you can buy a second hand park brake control module and get it fitted or do you have to buy them new and get them done by vw? It's a 2006 vw passat.

Yes anyone with vagcom/vcds or similar diagnostics can replace it with a secondhand one providing you get one with the same part number as the old one.
Why are you changing it and what fault code have you with it?

Not sure what the fault code is. But it has been giving a small bit of trouble for about 2 years now but It did cause that much that it bothered me too much. I was told when I got it checked 2 years ago that it needed a new calliper and a control module. This was by a vw main dealer and I think the price was 1000 or something around that. Anyway in the last few days it has got considerably worse so I will have to get it fixed so am happy to find out I can get second hand one. Thanks.

I wud replace park brake button first if not already replaced as this is very common to give trouble and only costs maybe €35 and a 2 min job to fit

The button seems to work fine. As sometimes one calliper releases but the other one doesn't.

It's probably the caliper then. Either way you should get a diagnostic done again rather than relying on the information from 2 years ago.

Just out of interest doe the park brake button have to be coded in. Or is it a case of just changing it and that's it?

I will give u abit of advicertain it's not the module and it's not the button or caliper it's the wiring going to the caliper the corrode at the pins and the wiring itself. The loom is about 60 euro I think and has to be soldered in. Have seen afew over the last while

Brother has replaced both calipers in the last 2 years. The electric motors are not very waterproof and let water in and corrode. Then they cease.

In his case if it was the loom or module then new caliper would not work reliably. This has not been the case either time. Fit new caliper and the brakes work fine.

Obviously that's not to say you don't have corroded loom or a faulty module. That's my armchair diagnosis but it really needs a more up to date examination.

My guess is caliper, can be bought new for ~€225 and is possible to do DIY without any software. Have witnessed this first-hand twice.
