Upgrade on a budget: Which components first?

I'm looking to upgrade my dads old PC, not for gaming just for general speed. At first I was thinking of upgrading the HDD to SDD and adding some ram, but then I though that maybe I would have to upgrade the motherboard for an SDD to work and then I might need to change the processor for a new motherboard. However if I was going to change all of that, I might as well just look for a new PC altogether. (Also, I have a spare 2.5" 5400RPM 500GB harddrive from a laptop, I could use that now and upgrade to SSD at a later date. )

So, firstly, in general which component is/are the best to upgrade first on a old PC?

Secondly, would a 2.5" HDD work in a desktop without a 2.5"-3.5" adaptor? Does the adaptor just hold the HDD in place (and therefore something homemade could be used) or does it have some other purpose?

Lastly, given the spec below, any suggestions on specific parts I could upgrade to?

    Specs:
    Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+
    Motherboard: GeForce6100PM-M2
    Ram: 1x 2GB DDR2

    Thanks in advance

For general use it's actually still a pretty good machine, if you wanted to up the ram to 3gb maybe (if it's Win7, if its XP 2gb is plenty), but adding an SSD would make a massive difference.

For web browsing and media the other spec's are still OK.
