    Still showing 149.99 for me.

I dont think this is capable of running Plex though (in case someone is buying for that reason):

edit: it was showing as 149.99 for me

I have a DS212J and it runs Plex AFAIK. It certainly used to. I had it installed for a time but stopped using it. Obviously it's not able to transcode as well as a proper server but it works.

This is an old model now, although its still perfectly capable. We've more of these in work than a "real" business should probably have, running for a while and all are fine.

DS212J defy runs Plex. Great piece of kit, but I think there is a newer version. Has more features than you could shake a stick at.

I have DS211j which is a few generations behind the model linked above and it's still a fantastic piece of kit. With Synology you aren't paying for a simple NAS but for the Synology OS on which the NAS runs. It is the Rolls Royce of NAS drives and has way more features than any other.

I'd be interested in seeing a comparison of the DS211j vs DS213J vs the lastest model. I'm sure the CPU and other aspects are upgraded but honestly I don't have any performance issues on mine which I use for backups and for streaming video which is all we use for tv.

I have this NAS and got it from Germany (getgoods.de) about a year and half ago with 2 x Seagate 4TB drives for about €500.

They are still selling it but supply WD 4TB NAS drives now -

    http://www.getgoods.de/10183814/synology-diskstation-ds213j-inkl.-2x-wd-red-nas-4000gb?sPartner=geizhals.at&utm_source=geizhals.at&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Synology%20DiskStation%20DS213j%20inkl.%202x%20WD%20RED%20NAS%204000GB

The ac adapter has an IEC/Kettle lead socket so it's fairly easy to swap out the 2 pin euro plug for a regular UK/IRL one.

It's great as far as regular DLNA goes but it does not run plex... or at least I haven't been able to get it working. There's a whole thread as linked to by stooge above...

I'm happy with the native media app and but for some the lack of Plex support would be a deal breaker I suppose...

Otherwise the Diskstation OS is really user friendly. The EZInternet/Quicklogin setup makes it simple to do port forwarding with most routers. DLNA is rock solid and works perfectly with my smart TV and the nPlayer app on iPad/iPhone. Overall it's one of the best purchases I've made in the last couple of years - zeros problems so far. The only thing it lacks is USB 3.0 support which is a shame but I don't feel the need to upgrade anytime soon.

Still use my old DS210J for work backups and it's a great little machine, Synology are brilliant.

I've since moved onto a 5-bay DS1513+ with 20TB storage as my main Plex unit :D

At the risk of sounding like an idiot here. How big is it? How much storage can it do, or is this it's primary use? What's the difference in this and external hard drives?

You can put disks of whatever size available in to it - believe 6TB disks exist now. Full size disks are more durable and faster than those in small external hard drives. Normal use gives you redundancy in case of disk failure as you have two disks holding the same data.

Then there's the various features of the Synology software that allow use as a media streamer, etc - meaning you don't need a computer turned on.

DS213j was released around May 2013, so not that old. Have had mine since they released it and it's been superb. Not as powerful as the more expensive models, but it is aimed at the affordable consumer market. Great piece of kit.
