Cork athletics (redesign the front page please!) put up an analysis of Ballycotton entries this year. I'm wondering, are there similar analyses for previous years? Or other races? About 40% of the male entries are masters, about 60% of the women.
    Has this always been true?

There does seem to be a lack of depth at Senior level, if I look at the recent Wicklow Senior XC > 50% of the top 20 were Masters.
I think it been discussed before, but there's a huge drop off from Junior to Senior, it's also very difficult to maintain motivation from being a competitive Junior to an also ran in the Seniors.
Also once life starts to settle down work, young family etc and maybe the onset of a middle aged spread, that can be the catalyst to return to or take up sport again, whether that's 5-a-side, cycling or running.

Dom what I notice specifically here in Wicklow are once the juniors hit college it gets harder and harder to keep them in the loop in local clubs, and often after college their 1st few jobs are either abroad or in say Dublin etc, and if they are still running at a competitive level then they will tend to transfer to a closer club. That's probably a nationwide issue.

Kinda makes sense, Seniors have more going on with their lives, social etc.
Masters, we are just boring old sods trying the get away from the kids

I would actually go as far to say, running is the new mid life crisis hobby!!

I would say that of 40 - 50 year olds who do a sport regularly, maybe a third of them are runners. (Note, I don't recognise golf as being a sport, not one you do for fitness anyway). The balance would be gym, cyclists, swimmers, 5 a side football, tennis, etc.... But I'd say running is the most popular.

Of 16-25 year olds who do sport regularly, I'd guess less than 5% see running as their main sport. That's my guess.

I'd say the opposite. Seniors have less going on with their lives.....

I think running suits the 40 year old with kids, because you can out for a run at any time of the day, you can run from your front door, you don't have to waste time going to or from a club.
