I don't understand why Grady got it instead of Sheahan in the first place. I always assumed that Group Political Editor must be considered senior to actual editor of each of the titles, and that's why he didn't get the job last time. But obviously not. Sheahan is very capable, so it'll be hard to replace him as GPE.

Things are looking up for Denis's minion fionann.

Did fionann ever mention the Gemma o Doherty case?

Maybe that job was mainly about putting manners on the Sindo on behalf of DOB. Now that the ancien regime has been swept away there, possibly DOB's intention is that both papers will revert to a more conventional management structure where the respective editors have primary responsibility for what goes into them, with Rae having a largely hands-off overseeing role?

Interesting theory. Hard to imagine, though, that the management structures would be so radically altered just to rein in a not-particularly-rogue* editor whose tenure was soon to expire.

Maybe, though, it could signal that a stronger editor is deemed necessary in conjunction with the group section editors.

There's plenty of seasoned heads in the Sindo who, in normal circumstances, would easily steer that ship. However, they would be seen as too close to the old guard of Harris and therefore not malleable enough for the current owners.

The old structure went with Harris. She, at least, wouldn't bend. Now there is no 'rouge traders' in the camp. The party line will be followed. Or to quote Something Happens: 'The beatings will continue until moral improves'.

Show me another publisher that has three national title with de facto editors all reporting to one editor in chief!
Tell me how Paul William's book ended up in the sunday world recently when they took him to the high court over his leaving? They will put manners on the parishes!

I know, it's remarkable. It's arguably the most powerful position in Irish media.

Tbh I know feck all about INM management structures, I'd never even heard of the GPE position until Fionnan started cracking the whip. But in any case, whoever fills that position now, I find it hard to imagine it will be as influential now there are two loyal company men in the editorial chairs...

Another perk of being editor of the indo for fionann, is that all penalty points he receives will be wiped.

    Quite a privileged job!
