    Hi All

Now, with a view to the future, I just want a machine that will last 4 – 5 years, and will be quick and responsive. I will upgrade as I go as well.

No games will be played on it just a general use home machine, multiple monitor, streaming, etc. – The occasional converting a video 3 times a year, but can do that overnight.

    Go for an:

    X-99 Board, Intel i7 5280, and 8GB DDR4 Ram @ €700 for all 3

    Or

    X97 board, Intel i5 4570 and 8GB DDR3 Ram @ 400 for all 3

Considering all the other components will cost the same, is it worth spending the extra €300

Will the 300 be justified vs speed, if you know what I mean?

    More info added:

ok, i will give more info

I am planning on using the flowing

Samsung 840 Evo 256GB SSD as Operating system
Samsung or Plextor M.2 SSD drive dedicated for downloads - nuff said.
    2GB DDR5 GPU
be quiet! Pure Power L8 CM 530W PSU.
    Nanoxia Deep Silence case.

But, main thing is, in 2019, i will still be using this machine...

not worth 300e more, for your requirements imo

I'd try and factor in an SSD too... in fact I'd drop to a i3 & b85 motherboard if it meant I could afford an SSD, such is the responsiveness gained by them

Seriously? All that for casual home use?

Not being funny but a basic i3, 8gb ram and a basic h81 board would easily last 5 years and beyond for those uses. The PC I'm typing this one is an E6550 Core 2 from 2007 with 4GB ram and it's still perfect for pretty much everything you've described (wouldn't be great at encoding versus a new i3 or i5 admittedly).

Why have you set a 2GB Gddr5 card as well? If you're not gaming, it makes zero difference whether you use a €30 R5 230 or a €900 R9 295x2.

And using an m2 drive purely as storage is also a bit baffling, with the OS on the SSD why not just use a regular hd, it won't make any difference really...

I'm with TerrorFirmer. I have a 5 year old machine and it is still running games perfect. All though it had a few upgrades along the way. SSD, GPU. But it is used for gaming.

You do not need a SSD for downloads the one SSD for OS is perfect and a large HDD for downloads is better. No need for 2GB GPU if your not gaming, total waste.

    Thanks all

this is more a case of want vs. need

i know I don't really need such a fast machine, but I want one...

I always bought my machine from Dell, in the 400 -500 range, and never complained, but, always wanted a top end system...

MY wife uses a Dell XPS 17" i7 , SSD, 3GB GPU top of the line gaming laptop, for her facebook games... ( we got it really cheap in the US ) and I have a case of the jealousness...

My current machine came with Vista, when I bought It in 2009, from Dell for under €500...

so, maybee if you can under stand this, you might answer this question...

    X-99 Board, Intel i7 5280, and 8GB DDR4 Ram @ €700 for all 3

    Or

    X97 board, Intel i5 4570 and 8GB DDR3 Ram @ 400 for all 3

Will the additional 300 be justified vs speed, if you know what I mean?

overclockers.co.uk forums has a really active X99 users thread, where the general consensus is that intel have brought out an unbelievable platform.

They are pushing it to its limits, and while there are some sporadic components relating to overclocking ( some can overclock really well, some are dirt at overclocking) the consensus seems to be it's truely a big step forward in terms of component development

and I get where you are coming from. I have absolutely no logical justification for the money I've spent last week, and will be next week, in terms of upgrading my machine. IT was perfectly fine the way it was, but I just want more, and I've the money to do it.

X-99 is the top end from what I can read, so I'd imagine if you want to go gung ho, you want to go with that :) It will absolutely destroy any games really, aslong as you have a good GPU to go along with it.

No, you will notice zero difference.

To be honest, you would notice zero difference between a €50 pentium G3220 and the 5280 for your uses.

The X99 platform is for enthusiasts - gamers, overclockers, benchmarkers, people who really put their systems through their paces.

It's like asking do I buy this car that can go 300mph or this one for 400mph....for use on Irish roads.

The X97 option is still overkill but at least it's somewhat realistic in line with what you want to do.

It's your money and if you want to convince yourself that it's worth it against advise, that's grand, but you are 100% wasting your cash - you do realize that using an m2 drive for storage is one of the biggest wastes I can think of? It won't make any difference at all.

2GB Graphics card? Unless you are gaming, it also makes no difference whatsoever.

Surely it could be better spent on lovely high-end speaker setup, 4K monitor, etc where you would actually get some use out of it. Even on the case, which you have to look at every day? That I'd understand.

I went X99 before xmas and not impressed, its deadly but if you expecting WOW levels of performance increase its not there.

I reckon I got a 30% on previous I5, granted the GPU has yet to be replaced.

    Previous I2500k OC @4.2 16gb cheap ddr2 asus p8p67

    New I7 5820 16gb DDR4 Gigabyte X99 M power, CPU not OC`d yet so standard 3.30

Got an unexpected large work bonus so money for once wasnt an issue, pretty much the only reason i wasnt bothered about the price.

EDIt actually the best thing about the X99 is that motherboard has buttons on....actual on/off reset buttons and an LED to tell me wtf is wrong the beeps are gone :D Along with stupid cabling for LED and HDD the fact no mobos had no on off buttons used to annoy me.

I have a 5 or 6 year old X58 Gigabyte motherboard with buttons and a number display LED and also normal LED's to tell me what is wrong.

spend the budget on a herman miller areon chair, expensive mechanical keyboard and nice mouse, mousemat, nice speakers and an ips monitor. Also spend the bit extra to make it 100% silent, and maybe do a little nas for storing movies to stream to the tv, all of these things would be of more use than X99 since you're not doing anything that needs the power

Everything will be outdated in a few years. Buy what will work now and replace it when it becomes too slow for you, since you're not gaming or anything that needs this extra power, it's completely wasted on better components.
