Mentioning planned holidays at interview

    Hi,

    I'm job hunting at the moment and due to a family wedding abroad have already booked for 3 weeks holiday. Is this something I should mention at interview or wait and see if I get an offer and then tell them

    wait for an offer, but if you do get offer, tell them then before you actually start.

    Yeah I was thinking that too. Interviews are few and far between so don't want to ruin them by telling them that. Thanks

    If you get offered job, there is no obligation for the employer to grant you 3 weeks off at the time you want, you may not even have accrued that much leave by then.

    You dont have to have the time accrued to be granted it .Any decent employer will give you the leave knowing you will accrue the time later

    Agreed - but 3 weeks is a long time. I could see one week to 10 days been approved no problem but three weeks continous leave is a long time. Some places dont even allow this. What about if there is compulsive holidays etc. that already use up some of the annual leave?

    OP I would not mention it until job offer stage but you need to consider how flexible you can be. What if they say no but we will allow you two weeks. Where does that leave you? Can you change holidays? Hopefully thats not a problem but something to consider!

    You do to be entitled to it. It also depends when the 3 weeks are, OP doesn't mention this. If the holiday is next October then there may not be an issue, if it's at Easter, no employer is going to pay someone 3 weeks of annual leave if they are only there for a short time. Also, as poster above stated, 3 weeks is a long break and granting it at a particular time may depend in whether others had already booked time off.

    I'm sure this is all something the OP needs to negotiate if/when they get the offer. No point in trying to second guess what any particular employer will allow as employers vary wildly in how lenient they can be. If the wedding is very soon, asking to delay your start date could be another option.

    Hi,

    Thanks for all the replies. The holiday is in August. I wouldn't expect them to give me 3 weeks as to be honest my last job would only allow 2 weeks at a time. One job that i'm waiting to hear back from is a jobshare so if i were lucky enough to get that it would only be 10 days i would be looking for.
    Anyway the way this job hunt is going it may not even be an issue

    Wait for an offer, but be aware that they may not agree with your holiday plans even if you have booked them.

    The op has just said they want leave, not paid leave.

    While three weeks at a stretch is an issue in some places, it's not in others. And managers can grant unpaid leave if they want to.

    IMHO, if you get offered the job, then make getting the time off part of the salary negotiations.

    OP is not entitled to either 3 weeks paid nor unpaid leave, it will be at the discretion of the employer.
