Feeding stores

It's always been the rule here to feed dairy cross stores nothing but silage during the winter and let them back to grass hungry as two year olds to be finished in the autumn. Thing is the weight seems to fall off them in the shed and they go out in worse condition than they go in. Albeit they probably grow frame.
Does it pay to meal them for the first couple of months inside or will compensatory growth in the spring do the same job?

I always give them 2/3 kilo of beef ration. Really shows on them.

If weight is falling off them in the shed that's saying silage is crap and u need to feed meal, even if it's good they should be getting 2 kg anyway up to a month prior to turnout.
