An apple product recently came into my possession and I want to add a few golf apps? What are the best free ones? Is there anyone that actually can measure distances or are all those the paid for apps?

And what's the best stats app?

Hole19 is a very good GPS app. It's free with no subscriptions.

Try fungolf GPS - available on the app store.

Swing by Swing is another good one for use as a rangefinder, scorecard and stats

I like and use the Nike golf stat app (but haven't tried any other).

So you're the fella holding everyone up with your pacing up to the green with your 50 yard pitch and trying to do the maths on the back of a card, get yourself into the 21st century and get yourself a rangefinder.
OP +1 on the golfshot APP for stats, second to none IMO.

No not at all, yep them lads wreck your head, no i head for the 200,150 or 100 depending on the tee shot and then count/pace to my ball ready to rock, weapon in hand, as for judging how far the pin is on the green, front, back middle, add between 5-7 yards is usually fine. The lads walking around saying what are you getting john? looking at their devices are the people holding people up more than the pacers imo.

Yeah, Live Golf Scores and News is what it's called, looks like it pulls info from the European Tour website so if a slightly different URL is in play it can fall over.

Hole19 has both distances and stat tracking for free!
In my opinion, the best golf gps app out there!

Some apps also provide information on wide and elevation, these are not allowed in competitive rounds from what I understand.
    From the R&A site.
    Q. What kind of distance-measuring devices are allowed by Local Rule?

    A. A GPS, laser, smart phone, any really; however, it is important that the device only measures distance. The use of a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect a player’s play, such as gradient or wind speed, is not permitted, regardless of whether such an additional function is used or not, and even if that function is disabled.

There is a local rule in Portmarnock links not allowing smartphones as DMD's.

But I am sure the society will allow it.

Unfortunately, we will be going with course rules - if they don't allow them then we must respect that.
