US to chair Arctic Council (2015-2017)

    I'd say it will likely occur in April/May in Iqualit when the Canadians will handover the chairmanship of the Arctic Council to the US.

    What impacts do you think will be in terms of governence, shipping and US sovereignty (especially their longstanding non-ratification of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea)?

    I'd expect them to act in their own nation's interest. Same as any other country. Given the mineral wealth and navigational avenues that will acrue with the opening of the north west/east passages this area of International law will be interesting to watch. However, even with the US's reluctance to enter into pan-lateral treaties, they are usually a good actor on the global stage.
