Reading yesterday how opel are now putting this engine into Astra and have it in Zafira since summer and intend rolling it out in other models. It is supposed to be excellent regarding economy and quietest in class.I think Opel lost a lot of sales over last few years by persisting with the 1.7 cdti which I think was based on a 12 year old Isuzu one.It was a rattly, dog of an engine and stopped me buying an Astra saloon last year.Lovely car but totally let down by the engine.New one is 1.6 with either 110 bhp or 136 bhp,far lower emissions etc.Anyone tested it in zafira yet?

You're right about that Astra Saloon, Furlong. They're a grand looking motor.

Was talking to a opel salesman my dad knows him well and they had a meriva in with this new engine I thought he said it was 130bhp. He said felt so quick to drive compared to any of Opels other older diesels. He even described it as dangerous quick in the meriva as he said it will plough on to really high speeds with out much effort. I was kind of suprised as he's not one to exaggerate but it's hard to believe it would feel that nippy. Either way seems like it will be a good engine.

That Astra is in desperate need of a revamp.

Opel dropped an Astra Saloon in to us in December, with the 1.6d 110ps engine in.

It's a vast improvement over the 1.7 version, and even though it was only the 110 version, it felt very peppy and certainly wasn't lacking in power at all.

It wasn't especially quiet though. Only knew it was the "whisper diesel" as my colleague said so, and also commented that it's a good bit louder than a whisper - sounded just like any other diesel engine to me.

Only had it for a couple of days and only did a few short journeys, so no idea what consumption is like.

Still thing the Notch (official term for the Saloon!) is a horrible looking car, and the SC version we had still gets a plastic steering wheel and no Bluetooth - which I'd only expect on the very basic model (SC is one up from base), and that unacceptable compared to others in the class.

Had to do a bit of a bodge to a bumper of an audi recently while the engine was idling in my ear. Certainly no chance of a conversation with the owner unless the person was in your other ear or shouting at you.
Was on an on and off icey road in a passat waiting for that tell tale quietness when you are on an icey patch. Nope!

Strange the things you take for granted with petrol.

So maybe by whisper diesel they mean "almost the refinement of an old subaru petrol" when it's warmed up?

The saloon in 2011 but it's still just a booted version of the model launched back in 2009.

Good point Bazz. Jaysus, I could've sworn that saloon only came out about a year ago though.

Looks like I was mistaken and it was 2012 the current saloon appeared. They continued to sell the previous generation Astra saloon along side the newer hatchback and estate up until then.
