I changed owners on my car and back to me again to avoid back tax. It works. But they'll soon close the loophole...
    QUES:
In the tax office one day I gave a fleeting moan about having to pay a months backtax cos the Vrc said I owned the car from the 26th of march... lady behind desk advised me if it happens again, there a 14 day grace period avail if u buy a new car before you are liable to tax it. Cant remember it all. Anyone heard of this? I think it's the best kept secret regarding motor tax.....

No grace period as far as I'm aware. I bought a car on 25th of June this year and that's the date that was put down on the logbook. I received the log book around 3 weeks later and went to the motor tax office in town to pay the tax. I thought I'd be liable for the tax from July onwards as that's the month that the logbook came into my possession. I was told that the seller and buyer have the option to go to the office with the logbook on the day of the sale if they wish so, technically, I was liable for the tax for the month of June.

I'd say she was talking about a 2 week grace period the Gardai would give you to get it taxed after buying it. And you'd have to provide proof that you taxed it after they let you go.

Yup I once bought a car on the 30th of a 31 day month, went to tax it the following week, and was told to bring the form to the guards and declare it off road for the previous month

    Any proof of this ?

ps....and it's not a 'loophole' as such. It's always been the case that a new owner is only liable for Tax from the month in which they acquired the car.

I bought my current car at the end of a month, it hadn't been taxed in a while. The seller was happy to put the first of the next month on the cert as the date of sale. Two days later he posted the cert to Shannon. Sorted.
