Credit Card hacked after transaction today

    Hi,

booked flight on Ryanair earlier using credit card. First use of card in about 2 months. I assume that there is a vulnerability in my PC so I run multiple checks (Malaware, Spybot and Trend Micro). Spybot indicates that the Windows XP firewall ahe been bypassed on Explorer, but the Ryannair transaction was made using Firefox.

    Questions :-

    1. Can the bypass have been the source of the hack?
    2. How do I check that the PC is OK for re-use for online transactions?
    3. How can I check what files (if any) have been read/uploaded by an intruder?

Thanks in advance for your answers,

    M

I can't answer the question in full, but as I'm sure you know, Windows XP no longer receives updates and shouldn't be used. When you say "the Windows XP firewall ahe been bypassed on Explorer", is it Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) as opposed to Windows Explorer (i.e. the file manager explorer.exe)?

    Hey Mark,

As already mentioned, you need to stop using Windows XP. I had to log into a Windows XP machine the other week for some stupid thing that would only run on Windows, and within 5 minutes my antivirus was telling me it had had to block a virus. I hadn't had a virus on that machine for years before that. XP is no longer secure.

this used to work - zero gaurantee , might make your computer unusable

open notepad , put this in it :
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMWPAPosReady]
    "Installed"=dword:00000001

    save it as something.reg

integrate it into the registry , it will now think its a point-of-sale till or something and update away all day

still a bad idea though , update to win8 or bsd or linux something else

Ok so it's nothing to do with Internet Explorer. Upgrade to Win7 if you can, otherwise get a new PC

Don't rely on anti-malware software. Much of it is dumb and updated after the fact and there are so many permutations of malware no machine based solution can keep up.

Keep your (new) machine up to date for the o/s, use something like secunia.dk to keep the applications up to date, and don't click on any link you don't expect. If someone you know emails you a link, and you weren't expecting it, don't click - call them ask find out if they sent the link to you first.

Don't use internet-cafe's to log into websites with your credentials (eg checking email) or to perform transactions involving payment cards or where you have to provide your IBAN or personal info (eg DoB). Even if the login page is encrypted, somebody might be using a keystroke logger to record your credentials.

In hotels, airports or other public WiFi areas use a VPN.

If you watch videos or visit websites using flash you need to make sure that you are running the latest version. Equally .pdfs are an often used malware carrier - be sure you have the latest adobe reader installed and only download from trusted sites.

There is no perfect security - but using Win XP in 2015 is asking for trouble.

There are several options. If you're a student some places have Dreamspark and you might be able to get them for free. Shop around and make sure it's genuine. If the PC is very old and bad spec you would be better off getting a new one.
