Hi folks. Posted here a while back about broadband and got a good answer so hoping i could get some additional advice if i could. Basically for 2 months now i have been going around the same circle with eircom about getting a new phone line installed in my appartment for broadband. They make an appointment, then dont show up, i phone them asking whats going on, no explanation they just book me a new appointment and then dont show up again. After 5 missed appointments im thoroughly fedup and looking for alternatives.
I contacted sky today and they told me that i had to get eircom to install a new line so sky is out of the question. Is there nobody else in Ireland who can order a new phone line to be put in?
Up to this point to get by ive been using an O2 3G dongle just to get by but i would hate to be using this longterm as it cuts out quite a bit. But at this point im so annoyed by the line id almost consider a wireless option. Would getting a wireless router from digiweb or some other company be any better quality and more reliable than the dongle im using now? Any help or advice is very much appreciated thank you.

Be careful here. As far as I know there was an arrangement made some time ago that the isp you wish to join should arrange the installation of the line with Eircom. (Eircom of course supply the line in these cases) If you ask Eircom directly to supply the line then you will be stuck in a contract with them for possibly 12 months.

It is difficult to get the basis for this agreement and it has been an issue in the past that some isp staff were not aware of it and referred new customers to Eircom. I suggest that you ring Comreg for clarification before you make a final decision. Also Eircom may consider that you have already ordered from them.

I think this is correct too. In the past anyway, Eircom want you to sign up to a contract to get a line put in. If you are going through Sky or Vodafone they are able to get it done and you only have to have the contract with them.

I'm virtually certain it is the case but I have not been able to find anything on line which gives the basis for it. I presume it was to address the fact that previously anyone wanting a new line would order it from eircom and then immediately leave Eircom for another isp. This presumably left Eircom with the costs of installing the line and no resultant revenue.

There were definitely some threads on this on boards some time ago.

You have to remember there are two eircoms. If you order a line from eircom its eircom retail who pass the order onto eircom wholesale and you will be locked to eircom retail for 12months. Order it through vodafone and they submit the order, their line for 12 months. Same for all the others.

Confusion used to come from sky as they didn't like/want to issue activation orders and would tell you to come back in a year.

Do they hit you for a line rental charge either way?

No matter who you go with eircom wholesale get paid for the copper infrastructure. So whether its itemized on your bill or not its something you pay for.
