Query re: Aer Lingus Flights to US

Myself and herself are looking to go to New York for a few days in July this year. The flights with Aerlingus are coming in at almost 1700 for the two of us - which seems outrageous. Checking with cheapflights.ie etc, the best on offer is 1350 - but this involves flying through London and would be 15hrs plus each way.

Can anyone advise me if the Aer Lingus flights are likely to come down in price or will there be a sale at any stage? (There is an AL sale at the moment - but only for travel up to April)

Have you looked on skyscanner? You might find a cheaper option there. I seen return flights for 699 per person going with aer lingus in July.

You are flying at the peak of the summer during school holidays so could expect to pay E700+.

No one can tell you if prices will come down - once a fare bucket is sold out they sell the next fare bucket and so on....

Quite a few airlines fly to the US, why the obsession with Aer Lingus? Go with whoever is cheapest.

OP, don't travel during the first week of July, or you'll get hit with all of price hikes associated with the 4th of July holiday.

Transatlantic fares are a disgrace really, your average fare to New York is around €600 for 6.5 hours travel. In comparison your average fare to Thailand or Singapore is €600 - €700 for 12 to 14 hours travel, practically double the flying time for similar money.

This added with the Euro/Dollar collapse and you could be looking at $1.10 to the Euro by July which will make for a fine expensive trip and then there is the Americans and their grotesque tipping expectation culture.

Head east not west is my advice.

The price of oil has fallen dramatically in recent months.

Airlines tend to hedge the majority of their fuel well in advance so we won't see fares being lowered (on the basis of cheaper oil) for a few more months at least. It's impossible to predict if prices will drop by July but I do expect to see cheaper air fares at some stage this year what with oil now being less than $50 per barrel.

As others have pointed out, there are a number of alternatives to Aer Lingus for direct flights to NY from Dublin. Definitely worth checking these alternatives.

Aer Lingus have flights to NY for under 1,200 for 2 people currently accross July. You won't get much better for the month in it.

Delta, American and United also offer direct NY flights from Dublin.

I read a few years ago that the minimum cost of a EI ticket would be approx E200 per sector plus taxes....so the OP's trip would be minimum E1000 at the best of times. July being the busiest time would see all the cheaper fares gone by now.

I recently booked flights direct from Orlando to visit Dublin on Aerlingus for just over $700US roundtrip (just under €600), and everyone I've talked to says that was an AMAZING deal. I stalked the fares like crazy and waited until the had a sale, about 8 weeks ahead of time. I chose to go in February because the airfare in the summer is so much more. Good luck!

Also if you go from Dublin, you will pre-clear the US immigration in Dublin. You do not get this from London.

Bad time to fly for prices. I went with Aer Lingus to Detroit on the second of December to visit my girlfriend flight cost €580 and that's with a connecting flight to Detroit as Aer Lingus don't fly direct to there my destination with Aer Lingus was Boston Logan International I then got a flight with JetBlue to Detroit Metropolitan Airport I thought it was a good price overall. To fly with any other airline the costs were close to the €1000 range. United Airlines cost almost €2000!! Wouldn't hesitate to fly with Aer Lingus again.

I agree. I avoid their rude staff and lesser product like the plague. If they weren't "ours" and Irish not a chance would half the people that defend them do so.

Each to their own. You may find that EI are expensive, but as they above posters shown there are bargains to be found.
Really depends on your final destination and your time of travel. You will have a wide range of ticket prices on a single EI aircraft due to the range of variables that determine ticket price.

It is still not worth paying the Aer Lingus premium.

Any of the US carriers leaving Dublin have the same advantage. I was pointing our the pitfall of going through Dublin.
