If not, apart from cash, what alternatives do I have?

It's hardly a small fee. Your Irish bank will charge huge fees (up to more than €11 with ptsb) for using it outside the euro zone. On top of that Thai ATMs charge about €4 per withdrawal.

If you're going to carry cash you might as well carry euros. You'll get a much better exchange rate over there than you will here.

Bear in mind that in Vietnam there's a withdrawal limit on ATMs, I think it's €100 limit or could be less, but bear that in mind as you'll charged each time you've to make a transaction, if I were you I'd bring US dollars to Vietnam and exchange them over there. Check out this link:

I recall a tread asking for this info so thought I would post on our current experience.

    At time of posting, 20,000 dong = $1.00 usd/aud ( close enough) so 1 million dong = $50 bucks.

In HCMC at the International Airport, we withdrew 3million dong each, but from memory, you could take out more. (Citibank and ANZ atm's available.

Around HCMC, we were able to withdraw 8 million dong at a time.

In Hoi An, the limit per withdrawal was 2 million dong.

In Hanoi, some atm's limit you to 2 million.

We have found several ANZ ATMs and their limit is 5 million.

I will report on Halong Bay and Nimh Binh in a few days.

Cant post link but Google trip advisor withdrawal limits ATMs Vietnam for more Info.
