Well I've been a fan of combat sports and MA for a long time. I've been training in Pencak Silat for 6 years or so, but want something that will focus fitness more and the chance to compete and have fun (no competitions in Silat). I am not egotistical whatsoever, but the idea of combat to me is a science experiment. Figuring out your best attributes and put them to the test in a respectful and controlled manner. And would come with a open mind, despite Silat experience.

Do you guys think it is possible to make the transition, into a sporting art from a defence based one. Also, how do mma gyms work. Us it a one stop gym and coaching center, or do they purely do lessons. What's the costs if membership typically etc. I'm living in ballyfermot (south West Dublin) so any ideas on local clubs appreciated.

Closest place to you is probably SBG or maybe Kyuzo (I'm not great at directions though, so if you look around you might find some other places.)

The way it works is that you phone or e-mail them and say "I want to do MMA classes." and then they say "That's good, we teach MMA classes" and then you go to the MMA classes. SBG are fairly particular about you arranging a meeting for your first visit so that they can fit you in correctly. As far as I know they have different payment plans depending on what you are doing there.

You will probably have to do separate striking and grappling classes for a while before you do the MMA class, but just for long enough to get you orientated.

Silat MA were originally combat, not self defense. Their origins are pretty similar to Muay Thai. In that respect a lot if it would carry to MMA in the same way.
Anything was ineffective in MMA would be obvious, or exposed very fast.

There are Silat competitions btw. Although, maybe not it ireland. It's one of the sports at the asian games.

As for MMA, different gyms have different set ups and structures. It all depends.
SBG Naas rd is close to you. And would be worth your while calling in or emailing and seeing what option suits you.

My one piece of advise is to go in with an open mind, and follow as instructed.

Much later on when you are comfortable you can incorporate what you already know, into a sparing situation and see what works or by asking the coach after classes.

It can be very frustrating showing a technique and turning around and seeing a lad doing something completely different that they learnt in "whatever kwo do" or saw on youtube.

Doing MMA is simple, as mentioned you check what gyms are accessible to you or near by, call them, try out a class or arrange a meeting, go to class.

There is no big hullabalu, and you are dealing with normal people who want to share their knowledge.
