The 2015 indoor season will begin to pick up pace in the coming weeks, with Irish athletes aiming for success at the national championships in Athlone (21/22 Feb) and selection for the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Prague (6-8 March).

We also have the AIT Athletics Grand Prix to look forward to on 18th Feb, featuring none other than High Jump master Mutaz Essa Barshim and former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell.

    Some handy links:

So, who are your Irish athletes to watch this indoor season? Will O'Lionaird, Robinson or English take a tilt at the middle distances in Prague? Will Amy Foster or Joan Healy challenge Anna Boyle's 60m NR of 7.30? Will we field a men's 4 x 400m team, after our fifth place finish in Zurich last year?

While technically in 2014, Ciara Mageean opened her indoor season with a 9.11 performance over 3000m. Not sure if this was a mixed race or a solo run, but it's encouraging nonetheless. Fingers crossed for an injury-free year for the former World Youth and Junior silver medalist.

That was a solo run in the women's race by Mageean. Would be great to see Mary Cullen compete in Prague too.

Every year I wish and hope that Mary Cullen gets to have a full, healthy season on the track and XC, but alas she has been plagued by injury. I remember reading a preview of the Gerry Farnan XC that mentioned she was aiming to run, but there was no sign of her.

In other news, Twitter informs me that Joan Healy opened her season with 7.47 over 60m in Manchester. Everyone else was outside 8 seconds, so pretty much a solo run.

It was Phil Healy. She ran a 7.46 and a 7.47 at the one meet. I think her pb is 7.43 so a very impressive seasons opener.

Think the men's mid-d in Prague could be strong for us in particular. English, Ó Lionáird, Robinson, McCarthy, Travers, Murray and others. I feel we can definitely come back with more than the 2 medals that we won two years ago. 4 or 5 maybe?!

4-5 medals?? Sounds like you are living in the clouds. We'll prob have 4-5 medals chances, but rarely do we convert all of them.

Medal chances are probably English, Robinson, O'Lionaird, 4x400, maybe Gregan, and perhaps Mageean if she stays healthy. Who else?

BTW, we got 3 medals 2 years ago, once Derval gets awarded her bronze (don't know why it is taking so long).

Hardly living in the clouds when English and Ó Lionáird have already won European medals and Robinson was 4th in last summers Europeans and I wouldn't put them in the category of being outside shots with it unlikely they'll convert. If English, Ó Lionáird and Robinson run the 800m, 1500m and 3000m, I think they could all medal and then another medal from say Mageean and thats 4. Again I would stress that I wouldn't consider Eng, Rob and ÓL as having half chances like other Irish athletes in previous championships with slim chances of winning a medal, I would strongly fancy them if they are in decent shape.

I'm notoriously crap at predictions, but I would think 2 medals is realistic if a little conservative. I don't believe Tom Barr is planning a full indoor season, just a couple of races, so that would dent the 4x4 team's chances. For the record, I think Britton is aiming for the World XC, not a spring marathon or the indoors.
It was Phil Healy. She ran a 7.46 and a 7.47 at the one meet. I think her pb is 7.43 so a very impressive seasons opener.

Apologies, you're correct. She ran 7.36 in Athlone last year, but it's still a good opener to get rid of the cobwebs.

Anyone know the situation with Collins is following her redshirting?

Based on last years indoor result (9.11/15.41) would be great to see the possibility of a full team for the event

John Travers with a very optimistic season opener in 3.59.62 win in New Balance Games getting Standard for Prague. Looked pretty smooth running through the field in early stages before taking it on with just over 800 to go, pushed to the line but good to have qualifier nailed so early.

According to his blog the 3k at the European indoors is the Main spring goal anyway.

The indoor season kicks up a notch over the next few days. Athlone will host the AAI Games on Sunday, which will be live streamed again. The coverage of the U20/U23 champs last weekend was great so looking forward to watching this weekend's action.

Three major global meets and some smaller meets take place throughout Europe too:

The PSD Bank Meeting takes place in Dusseldorf tonight. It's live on Eurosport from 6pm, and startlists can be found here. No Irish unfortunately, but a few saucy fields especially in the men's middle distances.

The Karlsruhe IAAF Permit meet takes place on Saturday, with the Russian Winter meet taking place in Moscow on Sunday.

In Vienna this weekend, Kelly Proper and Anthony Lieghio will take to the boards over 200m/long jump and 800m respectively. Start lists here.

Danny Mooney gets Q time for Europeans with 3.42 today at AAI Games. Ciara Everard also got the Q time, just squeezing under 2.03.5.

Andrew Coscoran also had a super run in the 1500m, 3.47 gaining the Q time for European Juniors, and Kevin McGrath also got Q time in the 800m for European Youths. Not a bad day.

Great runs by Everard and Mooney, as well as Coscoran and McGrath. Achieving the standards this early in the season takes a lot of pressure off their shoulders.

Must also point out Sara Treacy's valiant effort over 3000m - she took 5 seconds from her PB in what was largely a solo run. If she can find a competitive 3k, perhaps the British Champs, she will have a good chance of wiping a few more seconds from that time.

Kelly Proper also ran 23.77 over 200m, showing some good early-season speed. She jumped 6.25m in the LJ. Will be interesting to see if she can push on in the long jump, after a few average years.

Phil Healy supposedly ran in London today - anyone hear how she got on?

The 2015 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston tomorrow (Saturday) also has some Irish interest.

An Irish women's DMR competes (hopefully to the same fantastic standard as last week's men's team) with Tarplee, McMahon, Kirk and Mageean. Really looking forward to seeing what Ciara can do over the mile indoor after her great Fifth Avenue Mile result in the autumn.

Ciarán O'Lionaird runs in a very competitive mile, the same event he ran a 3.56 to beat Mo Farah and Galen Rupp. His indoor PR is 3.52 from 2013 but am expecting great things following his DMR relay split of 3.58 last week after going out in 54 secs to catch Casey.

Phil Healy and Amy Foster through to the semi final of the 60m at the British Champs. Healy won her heat with 7.47 and Foster finished second in hers with 7.56.

Also worth noting that Tori Pena jumped 4.46m last week in the Pole Vault over in the U.S. That'll book her ticket to Prague, I believe.

19 second improvement? That's asking a lot. That's a huge drop at that level. Personally I don't see that happening. She also appears to be a better indoor runner than outdoors. She failed to better any of her indoor marks outdoors last year and was far from invincible. She also took 2 cracks at Sonia's 2000m WR last year, and didn't seriously threaten it. For somebody running 3:55 indoors you'd think that would be well in her range. Also, the gap between outdoor and indoor times is less percentage wise than it is for sprinting, due to slower speeds. I doubt she will beat that time outdoors at all this year.

I don't think it will be this year, I think she peaked early last year which will surely be addressed this year with the year that's in it. Tbh, I'm not convinced indoor tracks are that much slower than outdoor anymore. Some of her splits were incredible last night. She ran a faster last 2 miles than Jenny Simpsons AR. I think she ran the last 3 laps at 33, 33, 31 off the pace she started at.

I think sub-14 is a possibility for her, a small one but she's got the talent to push it close.

I would go so far as saying overall they are probably faster (atleast the fast ones anyway), taking wind and weather out of the equation and likes of Stockholm, Boston and even Athlone to an extent have been producing lightning fast times, I think the only reason why over the next few years (with modern indoor track facilities being built rather than existing ones being upgraded) why the WR's indoor won't be faster than outdoor will be down to peaking for major championships

Maybe for distance running but definitely not for sprints. The Sub 45 sec barrier has only been broken 5 times in history indoors. The tight bends definitely impact faster events more.

Mark English qualifies for the Euro indoors with a 1.47.17 clocking in Birmingham for 6th. Sara Treacy misses out on the 3K time, running 9.08. Dara Kervick finally qualified for the 400m in Prague with a 46.80 clocking in the heats of the National Champs.

Current qualifiers for Prague by my count:

    Men
    Dara Kervick - 400m
    Mark English - 800m
    Declan Murray - 800m
    John Travers - 1500m
    4x400m relay team

    Women
    Ciara Everard - 800m
    Ciara Mageean - 3000m
Tori Pena - PV (Although she's skipping Prague)

    Possible additions

One or both of Joan Healy and Kelly Proper in the 60m. Both have ran 7.41 and I'm hoping one of them will crack the standard tomorrow in Athlone.

O'Lionaird in the 1500m/3000m, although his form to date has been patchy.

    Sara Treacy in the 3000m

    Claire Tarplee in the 1500m.

    Any others?

Danny Mooney has the qualifying standard in the 1500m. He ran 3.42 in the AAI games. Paul Pollock and Gerard O Donnell also have the standards for the 3000m and 60mH respectively.

I can't imagine the AAI sending anyone without the standard. Claire Tarplee came close in the 1500m, I think she ran around 4:15/16. The best chance we have tomorrow of more people achieving the standards would be in the sprints. The distance races are too unpredictable especially if they turn out to be very tactical.

As far as I know O'Lionaird pulled out of the Nationals and tomorrow is the last chance for anyone to run a standard so I reckon his chances are gone.

Edit: Forgot to add about Thomas Barr, he ran 47.22 in the IUAA indoors (Standard is 47.20). No sign of him today unless he's injured? I'm sure he'll be chosen for the relay either way.
