How far should we go to accommodate peoples religious beliefs ?

    http://thedailybanter.com/2014/12/time-arrest-ultra-orthodox-jews-delay-flights-seating/#XiYD8bcIeKcXai4f.01
Yet again, the takeoff of a flight from New York to Israel was delayed because haredi (ultra-Orthodox) male Jewish passengers refused to sit next to women because their faith forbids it. The Dec. 20 El Al flight’s takeoff was delayed for 30 minutes when haredi men balked at sitting between two women, and other passengers refused to accommodate them in protest until one passenger finally relented.

I think if it was a Black person rather than a Woman the situation would have been dealt with differently.

Should have appealed to his wishes by seating him back in the airport and leaving him there

Shouldn't go any distance, they are THEIR beliefs. That they want to hold them fine, but that they may want the rest of us to alter our lives some how because of their beliefs? No, don't think so.

It really is quite interesting how all the most fervent followers of religions whose origin is the middle east (Christianity,Islam and Judaism) can agree on the fact that women are second class citizens.

The worth of a society is measured by how much it accommodates such beliefs.

If he had asked another passenger if they'd mind swapping (without mentioning the reason) and they were okay with it, and assuming the passenger being asked wasn't being pressured, then that's fine. Otherwise, they can lump it.

If you dont wanna sit there get the **** off the plane and try your luck again.

I'm all for accommodating any other individual providing the individual in question is prepared to meet me some part of the way.

The airplane in question is the Israeli national airline, EL AL. This airplane provided same-sex seating at an additional cost. These traveling men would presumably have known this as it has been an issue with traveling haredi Jews for a few years. If these seats were available, they should have requested them. If they were not available, organise a different flight but do not expect other passengers to rotate to your demands.

Indeed, the less sexism and bigotry in the name of religion is accommodated the better the society

This is the bull**** religion leads to, he should have been kicked off the plane,

or better yet sit him between the two fattest americans on the plane,

i don't care what invisible man you pray to but when your religion or religious views interfere with me thats when things get apocalyptic

If it is a reasonable request without religion then it is reasonable with it.

If you want to dance before eating then go for it, expecting me to dance before dinner then you can go **** yourself.

The sooner religious loons like this die out the better. Won't sit next to a woman?

    Bigots.

If I said I didn't want to sit between two Jews would you say somebody in the plane would swap a seat with me or would I be kicked off pretty quickly?

I'm very indifferent towards any religion at this stage, the sooner the better it fades out through the generations. People in the future will look back at us as we have towards different groups of people in the best, for example the Greeks worshipping many different Gods, it's just all so silly.

You and I will be deep in our cold, cold graves before the religions of the world fade out.

I know that, but it is inevitable IMO. Obviously smallish cults will forever exist but the majority of the world will not follow any religion.
