A few iPad questions

    Well lads,
I've decided I'm getting a tablet (32gb ipad air 1is €380 at argos) and as a lifelong android user with my only iOS device being an iPod touch back in the day I have a question or two. :pac:

That space is seriously limiting and the 64gb is far too much money. Is there a way to stream video to the iPad from a server. Such as having serviio installed on my desktop which streams video etc to my TV and android devices. I know about Plex but its not free.

Is 32gb enough space otherwise for apps?

Will I cry at how limiting everything is? :o

And finally.. That 4:3, aspect ratio.. How annoying is this for movies?

    Thanks ladies and gents :D

Streaming video is the default method. If anything I'd complain about the lack of download options on apple devices. 32GB is plenty for apps but more is always better.

Apple devices may feel very restricted if you come from android. Both in terms of hardware, as in lack of sd card support, memory extensions, battery replacement, everything. Also on the software front. Unless you jailbreak the thing apple store is your only source and there are restrictions in place. Concerning file sharing, nudy stuff, gambling even, but some of that has eased up a good bit. I like my apple but yes they may feel restricted.

In practice though this isn't as bad as it sounds. Unless file sharing, porn and gambling is what you wanna do all day long it has everything you need and restrictions won't be felt at all.

I have an IPad 2 16g and i find that it is limited. I dont have music or movies. Just apps. I stream all my movies and videos from websites. As for the 4:3 aspec ratio. It depends on the site you are viewing the video from. If u are in fullscreen mode you can double tap the screen to zoom in or on the top right of the screen there is an icon for this.

PS: When you download an app the size is usually twice the stated amount than it says in the app store.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the response
I'd go android but the xperia z2 tab is fairly pricy and the galaxy tab s is a lag fest. Nothing really seems to match the iPad as a tablet and at this sale price point currently its looking the best option.

Probably the most important aspect for me though is streaming. I assume ye are talking about website streaming here such as Netflix and the like? What I actually mean is streaming movies I already have stored on a desktop/laptop to the tablet. I know Plex can do this but I'm ideally looking for a free alternative.. Such as currently in have serviio installed on my desktop which allows me to stream any file I have on my PC to a TV or any other device with serviio installed.. There is no serviio for iOS.

Finding an alternative to this would really settle me as I wouldn't be worried about the size of the iPad because I'd have streaming for movies and Spotify for my music :pac:

I'm an Android user who just got an iOS device for the first time (iPad mini), and I'm sad at what I've been missing all these years! Absolutely love it...ONLY thing is the limited space, but I got Netflix so, it's not even a big deal TBH.

I have a 16gb iPad 2 (and 16gb iPhone). I have never bought more space than that for an Apple device because its just not necessary if you manage your space right and use the cloud.

The only time Its at capacity is before boarding a long haul flight when I stock it up on movies and shows. Once I watch something I delete it.

When on terraferma, I use a cloud service for movies and music.

There are a few apps that allow you to stream. I use air video which installs a server app on your computer to stream your videos and convert on the fly as necessary. Very useful.

Vlc player will connect to a network drive too.

I use Plex and it's fantastic. The server software is free but there's a small charge for the iOS client app (€4.49 I think). If you're spending >€300 on a device, an extra fiver for some killer software isn't unreasonable.

BTW the Plex server also offers a web view from which you can play stuff, which is free. I use the app though as I find it a better experience

I have an iPad and I both use it to stream from my PC and to control my stream to my Chromecast via Plex, I would definitely recommend it.
