So I'm on vodafone bill pay paying €35 per month and got a free iphone 4 and get 2000 minutes 2000 texts and 2gb of data a month (the numbers are double the standard as my uncle's missus got me a friends and family deal).

I'm thinking that with my contract up in February that I'll move back to android having previously had samsungs. As regards phones I hear the galaxy s4/5 are good as is the HTC One, is there any other phones in that bracket? Or am I missing something obvious?

Also regards deals, I could buy the phone and go pay as you go if it was cheaper but Im not up for paying €500 for a phone. Is there a company/deal that is generally considered the best value? Data is my primary concern as its what I use most. If I could get an unlimited deal (actually unlimited not like 3gb unlimited) that be great as when I go back to visit the family we cant get broadband as the lines need to be upgraded so have to share a dongle. The odd time I'll tether it to my laptop when someone else is using the dongle but I'm cautious about usage.

Any help would be great here lads as I've no idea whats good/bad. As regards specs Im not that pushed but would like a decent camera as I'm doing a masters currently and will be using it to photograph documents in the national archives to work off later. As such if it would be good to have a decent quality image.

    Cheers!

I bought the Motorola Moto G 4G from Amazon UK and with the Motorola cover it came in at about €190. It's a beautiful phone with 8GB RAM and a microSD slot. I pay O2 €20 a month for 150 minutes, 150 texts and 700MB. All of the subsidised phones are crap deals, especially the iPhones because the Apple premium is crazy money. I own my phone and can switch network any time I choose. There's a Vodafone deal for €30 p.m. which I think includes 3GB.

    Hi there,
This package should be giving you 5GB - if you'd like to PM over your details, we'll make sure you're getting this?

    Thanks,

Before signing up with Vodafone, Three or Meteor for the 4G data plan make sure that 4G is available in your area or where you will require it and with the provider you plan to use. You can often get 3G deals much cheaper so no point paying for something you can't get or use.

If you are buying a phone through a contract make sure the data allowance is enough towards the end of your contract. eg a 5GB data allowance might look good now but 20 months into a 24 month contract it might only last you a week. Most people are doubling the amount of data they consume every year.

Theres no 4g back in Laois at the family home but I spend most of my time in dublin so its grand. Besides the 3 deal is better than any other ones I can see even if I only get 3g on it.

Three don't enforce their FUP so you can download to your hearts content. Only issue with that is some masts are very busy at peak, so check speeds are good in your locality before porting your number in.

Im a galaxy fan and usually buy my phones 2nd hand. Its not everyones cuppa tea but it suits me.
I can get a galaxy s5 in as new condition with warranty on it for €330/350 or an s4 for €260/270. Im using an s3 at the moment and cant see the point in upgrading unless i need to as the newer models while being better phones, they dont do anything extra that ill use that my s3 wont do.
I top up by €30 a month on vodafone payg and buy a package that gives me unlimited calls and texts to any network and 3gb of data for my €30.
For me its a better deal than buying a phone new and i dont want to be tied to a long contract.
Its an option worth thinking about but like i said, its not for everyone. A lot of people wouldnt trust a 2nd hand phone but my last 3 have been and worked out fine.

I'm with 3 for years their customer service isn't great if you have any problems but providing you don't they are miles cheaper than everyone else. Definitely worth switching to them.

just watch out with 3. Their service can be a bit ropey depending on where you are.
