    Hi,

My wife and daughter will be travelling to Orlando via Manchester next week on one way tickets with myself to follow soon after. I'm just wondering will I need to have some sort of a letter drawn up by myself or a solicitor giving my wife consent to travel with our four year old daughter (they are both U.S citizens)?

    Thanks

    Why would they?

Your wife has a passport and presumably, so does your daughter. Your consent is not needed unless there is some sort of dispute.

My wife has travelled abroad with my kids a couple of times recently, without me needing to do anything. Hope that helps.

Only if there was some custody dispute, and even then, no one would know/check

This happens at several airports around the world - I've encountered it personally a few times in Europe. It never seems to be an issue when it is the mother travelling with the children, but on occasion, a man travelling with children will be quizzed. While there may be no legal basis for the request (and I don't know if there might be), it can cause stress and delays, and maybe result in you missing your flight while trying to prove your innocence! In any case I've heard of, a letter from the spouse confirming permission to travel will suffice - no solicitors required. Tbh, it seems like a pointless exercise, but it keeps check in staff and border control officers happy and makes for a less stressful travel experience.
