    Hey guys..
Been looking for a car and came across a 2010 1.6D Sport Golf.
Low milage 33k miles.. 12 month warranty from a non VW main dealer.

The only thing that worries me is its a 4 previous owner car and a UK import.. Should this worry me at all..

Cartell Report is Amber for number of owners but nothing else flagged..

    http://mywheels.ie/car-history-check/paid-vehicle-report/?id=58a3ae&VRN=10CN1542

Any feedback on how reliable - economical these are..

4 irish owners and 1 uk owner on top of that.
I wouldn't bother. I know some people will defend it but for a diesel hatch that's too many people selling after a year.
Also, mileage is very low. You'd assume that at least one of the 5 owners would have driven it some bit.
    Any service history?

1 owner bought it in April from someone who only had the car 6 weeks (privately) then traded it in in July.

Do a bit more digging on the number of owners and service history. I.e. First owner could have been a main dealer garage who registered it as a demo model and sold it after a few months. Mileage is very low, what are the chances of all previous owners doing tiny annual mileage? Low mileage on a diesel car and frequent change in ownership could indicate a lemon.

First owner was in the uk.

The length of time the last 2 private owners held the car would be enough a red flag to avoid this car.
    Walk away.

I bought a car that was a few years old and had 5 previous owners.
owner 1 was the main dealer (it was a demo car)
owner 2 was the dealers Garage (it was a courtesy car for crash repairs)
that was within a one year period. The next 3 were all private sales, but the car was serviced like clockwork.
so it could just be something similar

I'd look at something else. It's not as if diesel Golfs are rare.

    Thanks for the feedback..
Going to take a testdrive if for no other reason that I've not driven this model before...
Will see service book etc when threre..

There's an abundance of golf's out there. You shouldn't have to settle on one that's a bit shady. Loads of ones with only one or two owners and a comprehensive service history.

My little anecdote - I was looking at a top spec focus a while back. It was 10 years old but the motorcheck report threw up 10 previous owners. As much as I wanted it, I left it.

I would want printouts of all servicing done to confirm mileage. Also it is very rare for a 1 year old car to be imported from the UK, it would unlikely be a saving over the model here when VRT was added. I would be concerned it was written off or repaired but not recorded and then shipped over here, contacting the original owner might confirm this.

Not unusual really, my previous BMW 3 Series was first registered in the UK in July 2008, it was imported and sold on by an Irish BMW dealer in March 2009. My current 5 Series has a similar story. Lots of main dealers were bringing them when they are just over 6 months old with small mileage on them in order to avail of the long manufacturer's warranty. Smaller or non franchised dealers however tend to go for the older ex lease stuff that's older with more mileage from auctions.

Test drove car earlier and apart from anything else driving position didn't suit me, by the time I got seat right my knee was hitting steering wheel changing gears

    Anyway..
He said car had been taken in last week, but I noticed they had a DD add up 18 days ago for it. Alloys were older style VW. He said it was 2 owner car and didn't think it was a UK import. Milage was 51k miles not 33k, said ad must be wrong.

Car was sweet and drove well but Golf not suitable for me..

Story behind car was it was involved in a fatal accident with a pedestrian locally whom my wife knew, so she wouldn't have it anyway. I'm presuming this was the owner who held car for 6 weeks.

On the bright side, I took out an 09' Mondeo from a nearby garage and loved it. He has some lower mileage versions coming in in the new year so I'll go back and se them..

Seen another advertised, 2010 Zetec 140bhp 66k miles for €11.5k. Might take time next week and look at that.

    Thanks for opinions..

I thought dealers didn't get added to the numbers as previous owners?

They do if the keep the car as a courtesy car or a demo car

They don't appear on the log book but don't they show up on some of these car history reports though?

Motorcheck reports tell you if private, company or dealer owner, dates of sale and have lots of mileage and write off info for Irish and UK cars plus if there is a possible outstanding manufacturer recall on the car, but check with main dealer to see if recal was done or applies to a specific car

They don't, but unregistered dealers do.
Also, on motorcheck they add the dealers in the ownership history.

Unregistered dealers rarely/never would put the car into their own name.

    Understood, but sometimes they do
F.e if they bought a car at an auction, it's put into their name automatically. Or the original seller refuses to hand over the book etc
    Rare but it happens.
