Main Event: Jon 'Bones' Jones vs. Daniel 'DC' Cormier for the LHW title.

Co-Main: Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone vs. the undefeated Myles ' Fury' Jury

    Main Card:
Brad Tavares vs. Nate Marquardt (MidW)
Kyoji Horiguchi vs. Louis Gaudinot (FlyW)
Hector Lombard vs. Josh Burkman (WeltW)

    Prelim Card:
Danny Castillo vs Paul Felder (LightW)
Marcus Brimmage vs. Cody Garbrandt (BantW)
Shawn Jordan vs Jared Cannonier (HeavW)
Evan Dunham vs Rodrigo Damm (LightW)

    Pre-Prelim Card:
Omari Akhmedov vs. Mats Nilsson (WeltW)
Alexis Dufresne vs Marion Reneau(Women's BantW)
So boards.ie, who've you got? Team Cormier all the way! I love the chap. He comes across so well every time I see him on Fox Sports and Jones just has that ridiculous talent coupled with an awful personality. I think this fights lives and dies on whether or not Jones can stop DC taking him/rag dolling him (see DC vs Dan Henderson) to the mat.

Will we see a new LHW champion post-UFC 182? 48 votes

Yes - Cormier will take the title.
    0% 0 votes
No - Jones will retain the belt.

Ah why'd you go and make the poll private?! Now how can I ridicule those who thinks Jones will lose? :p

Daniels wrestling is the best in the world and if it goes to the ground, its his win easily.
But Jones will just kick and punch from a distance for the first few rounds and then he will go for the win,on the ground just to make a statement.

Jones may not have a personality worth talking about but with skills like he has, does he need to?

Daniel can take punches from the best puncher as he showed against Hendo and it would be great for the weight division to have a new number one at the start of the year :-)

These are the best statements :)

If Cormier can't get the take down he takes a beating like everyone else. If he can he more than likely still takes a beating like everyone else. It'll just take a little longer for it to happen.

I really really hope DC wins but Jones tight UD for me

Jones to put a horrible beating on DC. DC's only chance here is getting it down and being able to do so in each of the 5 rounds.

I think Jones is just way too good and will demolish him. He might even stop him in the late rounds.

I agree, I'd love DC to win but I see this being very one sided.

I don't think this fight is as close as people are making it out to be.
I really hope DC wins because I can't stand Jones, but I can't see it happening.
I think Jones wins the decision every time.
I think Jones has a better chance of getting the KO too. He wins the striking battle every time.

I genuinely think DC's only chance of winning is if he lands a monster shot and finishes Jones. Either that or he opens Jones and hopes for a doctor stoppage.

In reality though I only see this going one way. I think it'll be Jones tearing DC apart and getting the win.

I really like Cormier and think he has a chance. Jones has never really had to fear the takedown, if Cormier is a genuine TD threat then it changes things a lot. Cormier is also used to fighting guys bigger than Jones, most of Jones opponents are used to fighting guys smaller than him. I reckon Jones will win because he always seems to pull it out of the bag no matter how difficult the situation but this is a big test for him.

After seeing what Jones did to Barnett, I had him as HW champ then and there. No one has done that to Josh Barnett. And then he did it to Hendo too.

I see Cormier getting tagged once or twice in rd1 and then flinging Jones around for the next 4.

Barnett and Jones are two different beasts. Barnett is nowhere near the same level as Jones.
As for Hendo he was an undersized light heavyweight out of his depth and past it. I dont see how he's gonna get inside Jones reach to take him down.
I just see Jones picking him apart at will. Cormiers only hope is getting him to the mat but I dont see how he's gonna manage it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭CurryFlavoured

It's not about quality of opposition, we know Jones is better than anyone else he's fought, but Barnett is 250 lbs and Palelei was 260+ lbs and Cormier ragdolled both of them.

If Cormier can consistently strike takedowns it'll be a whole new ball game for Jones. It means his kicks will be much more limited for example.

A big guy that excels at fighting smaller guys versus a small guy that excels at fighting bigger guys. Such an interesting matchup.

    Jones by unanimous decision IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,455 ✭✭✭weemcd

I don't know how this will play out.

I doubt either KO's the other. My wish would be a fight similar to Cain JDS 2 with Cormier playing the Cain role obviously

Can't stand Jones despite his talent

Jon Jones is so gangsta', he walks his cat on a lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭CurryFlavoured

JBJ is so out of proportion. His height and upper body has heavyweight written all over it, but then those skinny mini legs help him make 205.

I dunno. Barnett and Hendo are serious wrestlers and they were made look like children. It was how far apart they were that shocked me. Cormier has been boxing a bit in his last few but always while in a comfortable place, never in danger. But if he decides it's time for the mat, it's time for the mat. No one has been even close to stopping his TDs.

Incidentally, who would you fancy between Cain and Jones?

It'll be a great contest whatever way it goes. I still give Jones more than a shot, but I'm edging DC for now.

I'll honestly be surprised if Cormier wins. As for who wins between Cain and Jones, that's one I've always struggled with. My head says Jones for the same reasons I think he'll beat Cormier. But then again I think Cain is a different beast to Cormier! To be honest I dunno!

It's mad looking at other MMA forums this last few days, people have gone crazy for Cormier. You'd get the impression that Jones doesn't stand a chance if they were to believed.

It should definitely be a good fight but I'd take Jones everytime in this. More skilled, well-rounded, more dangerous, younger, fitter, more physically imposing, better level of experience.

I wouldn't make any out-and-out predictions for how the fight will play out but Jones is no joke, it'll take something special to beat him and I dont think Cormier is it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 650 ✭✭✭csallmighty

Predicting Jones to win by guillotine in round 2 or 3, after stuffing all DC's takedowns.

If he doesn't get the sub I see him using his movement and range to keep dc at bay and frustrate him, eventually winning by unanimous decision.

Man, I wish they still did "UFC Primetime". I'd love to watch one in the build up to this fight!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭broders3

Totally agree MrStuffins, very strange that they didn't do a primetime for this fight. It's their biggest fight in a long time and aren't willing to put the $ behind it to promote it with a primetime. I know they are expensive but they should use them sparingly, this fight being a perfect example. Best P4P (in my view) against a big character in Cormier. I have started to like Jones in the past year, it's like he is letting the mask slip a little. 'hey p*ssy you still there?' is a classic line. Greg Howard wrote a great piece on him for Deadspin. Definitely worth a read

Surely they would just be rehashing a lot of the same stuff from the countdown show, embedded and that bad blood special. There is plenty of content for anyone interested imo

im really looking forward to this fight, but i just dont see where Cormier beats Jones.

Ok yes he's clearly a better wrestler. But thats about it. Jones, for all his faults as a person (bit of a cocky twat), his all round skill set is sensational. The guy is an amazing mixed martial artist. Easily P4P No 1 in my eyes.

It should be an entertaining fight none the less though, i hope Cormier backs up what he's been saying, otherwise he's going to look extremely foolish

    same here

just dont see like a lot here how cormier is gonna beat jones unless he somehow can get jones down which I doubt will happen too often
think it could go down similiar to the jones reshad fight with cormier doing sweet feck all damage and jones cruising to a pts win but surely cormier will have more belief he can win this than reshad had esp after a round
I'd be surprised if jones managed to finish cormier myself

wonder would cormier just come out swinging early? that would make
    it interesting

I'd have a strong inkling that Cormier will do this. I don't see how jones stops Cormier getting the takedown. Hes so much stronger and more powerful than any wrestler that has faced Jones before and when he's down Jones length becomes a disadvantage against the compact short strikes Cormier can land. I don't think Jones has been in the cage with anyone who belives they could truly beat him since he first became champ. I think Cormier is the first who has the skills and belief.

He could take him down first. Everyone's been taking about DC's wrestling for months, and slightly forgetting about Jones' grappling. On the bottom verses Jones is not where you want to be.

    No it doesn't imo.
Leverage is huge in grappling. Sprawled out on top, Jones is tough to sweep. And elbows are as short and compact as any strikes imo.

off the top of my head I think gus may be the only man who believed he could beat jones especially during the fight

I think cormier believes he can alright but that belief will have diminished greatly after a couple of rounds

really do hope I am wrong though

Take the point on the strikes he does have nasty elbows.
I don't think his grappling/wrestling is up to Cormiers level though. He won't get ragdolled like past opponents but could very well get dominantly controlled.

Couple of heavy strikes or takedowns either way and one or the others confidence could drain pretty quick because I think they both genuinely feel that the other is capable of beating them. Imo thats what saved Jones against Gus, he never thought he would lose to him so the belief to pull through was there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 94 ✭✭12thofthe12th

For me the question lies whether or not DC can keep the pressure on, control Jones with his wrestling, and throw in punches when he can. That's the most realistic way of him beating Jones IMHO.

    threeball wrote: »

It isn't. But if Cormier goes in thinking, like the majority of people, that the grappling is entirely his domain, he could get put in and back and met with a stoppage or submission.

    **** just got real!!

Ariel Helwani did an interview with both fighters and at the end DC announced hes meeting with Steven Seagal who has 3 things to show him which will help him beat Jones!

    Epic stuff :p

I'm calling it here and now. DC wins at 2:32 of the 2nd round after Jones verbally submits to vicious ground and pound.

Joking aside, I do genuinely think Daniel Cormier has what it takes to dethrone the champ. A lot of will hinge on his ability to impose his wrestling and clinch control on Jones but I think a lot of people are underestimating his stand up as well.

For a guy who basically never threw a punch in anger until about 6 years ago, he has a fantastic striking arsenal and I can see his hand speed being a problem for Jones in the pocket. I'm expecting him to use his striking to open up big takedown opportunities.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

Fearful Jones will take it however hopeful an DC can slam him and take him with some GNP. Hopefully he can close the distance and get inside and work the take down. 8 times out of 10 Jones wins this I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

Can't recall looking forward to a fight as much as I have with Jones/Cormier.

I certainly think Cormier can do it but I feel he'll need a finish. He looked incredible against Henderson and threw him around like a rag doll. Jones is obviously a different beast but in terms of styles, this fight has all the potential to be epic.

    I hope it's a five round brawl.
