UAN and active phone line?

    Hi,
    Can anyone tell me where i could find my uan please?
    I have a house phone number that i don't use and i have not paid line rental in years,
    My current broadband is through a mobile dongle from vodafone,
    When i ring my landline from my mobile, i get the usual ring tone, does this mean that the line is active?
    I am going to get either sky or vodafone proper broadband in january,
    Thanks for any help,
    Id imagine i will probably have to contact eircom

    If you haven't paid line rental in years then your line probably isn't active. Give one of the company's a ring and they may be able to activate a service on it.

    Also it is likely your old number has been re-used by someone else, which is why it rings.

    When I cancelled my land line 6 years ago, the number became "not in service" and would not ring. About 4 years ago, for fun, I rang it and somebody answered. I muttered apologies claiming I'd dialed the wrong number. :P

    Just had an interesting call to eircom support
    Basically the phone number i was given when we built our house five years ago but has been dead for four years has been reassigned to a local business and a new number has been provisionally assigned to our house but they could not tell me that new phone number over the phone
    As my old phone number was given away then so too was my uan so i no longer have any uan
    He said that if i were to go with sky or vodafone broadband then either of those companies could set it up themselves without me getting a uan number for them through their own wholesale database he called it,
    Does that sound correct?
    I'm sceptical because i thought i needed the uan,

    UANs are used to transfer an account between line operators, doesn't apply here as its an inactive pair and needs to be reprovided not transferred.

    Sky may still ask for it as they resist paying for bew setups where they can, so just call vodafone and provide the address details. Theyll arrange for an eircom tech to come out and activate the line, at which point you'll be given a new number.

    Just spoke to sky sales team and the guy said they have to give me a nlp, new land phone, he said and that a tech team member would ring me next monday about it,
    Ill refuse to pay if they want to charge, if they insist then ill complain to eircom as they took the number off me in the first place

    Just on this, what exactly will you be complaining to eircom about? Your line was inactive for years. You can hardly expect eircom to indefinitely keep every number anyone ever had waiting just to make Sky or Vodafones life easier.

    Sky do it free of charge. You may have to keep on top of them though.

    The number you had some years ago, you were paying rental on. You stopped paying rental on the line, so the number was no longer assigned to your address.
    The telephone number was dead for a period of time so as to prevent nuisance calls to a prospective new renter by people you had previously given that number to contact, you on.

    Its nothing to do with making it harder for competitors. A seven digit number is an asset to a telecoms company. There are only so many combinations one can make up of seven digits, hence the reason telephone numbers increased to seven. We ran out of five digit telephone numbers. Anyway a number not being used any longer will eventually be reused, similar to mobile numbers.
