Recovering from back injury

A subject close to my heart at the moment.

Having carried a back injury for a while now it has flared to the point of having to consult a specialist. After a scan showing 2 bulging disc I have a further consultation to decide what is to be done about it. Not sure what surgery options are likely, but I looking to get some benefits of experience from some of the regulars on the forum.

Anyone wishing to share their experience?

    Cheers
    Martin

This is a post I had in Xmas wk 2010, played my first round 12 wks to the day after surgery. Surgery was a last resort for me though.

I am just recovering from surgery last Thursday.

I lived with pain in my lower back & left left for the best part of 2 years. I tried the lot, Chiropractor, Physio etc. The physio ruled everything out, told me take a month off & if it was still bad to go to my GP as it is probably a disc problem.

Went to my GP who referred me for an MRI and to a Pain Management specialist. The MRI results were sent to the PM specialist & showed that I had a bulging disc protruding in the centre & right side and trapping the nerve stem. The PM guy referred me to an Orthopedic back surgeon and said that it was likely that I would need surgery but he would also give me an epidural injection of steroids to relieve the pain on the nerve (had 2 of them, one in Oct & one in Nov). They didn't give much relief and I was taking 21 tablets (Lyrica, Tramadol & Paracetamol) each day up to last Thursday for pain relief.

I eventually got to see the surgeon on the 4th of Dec & have been ut of work since. He told me that surgery was the best option. He very kindly managed to get me in before xmas. I felt relief immediately after the surgery. I now walk without a limp for the first time in about 5 months. Now I just have to follow the instructions that I was given by the physios in hospital before I left (I was out by noon the following day). Surgeon said if all goes well I can be back playing in 3 months & considering the weather at the previous 2 yrs I won't miss much as it was April before I started playing much anyway.

    Best of luck with it

Sorry to hear that OP I hope you find the solution soon.

@SEORG how is it holding up for you since the surgery? Playing much golf etc etc?

I have been playing with a similar injury for the past 18 months.

I have a bulge in my L5, S1. When it originally flared up I could not walk, let alone play golf. After the MRI the doc said it was a borderline case for surgery but said it would be wise to wait.

During the 1st flare up I was getting Physio twice a week, I found that needling worked best for me. Once it had died down I started palates, a few months of stretching and then strengthening. I still get twinges, especially when I don't stick to my palates regime but have been able to play regular golf relatively pain free.

Of course anti inflammatory pills help too, I have a prescription for ones called Arcoxia, found the others would make me nautious.

Unfortunatley this is the case with NSAID's in general, trial and error with some cheaper over the counter ibuprofen or naproxen sodium might get a result as coxib based drugs like Arcoxia have different (generally more serious) side effects.
Not offering medical advice, just fact based on pharma experience...
My back and knees are fecked but I prefer to just stay away from the course and rest when they flare up...

My back is fine but flexibility in my left leg will probably never be 100% (not sure it was anyway tbh). I do a good warm up before a round.

Had a great year this yr, I'm 9 shots lower now than 4 yrs ago.
I play most wkends & twice a wk during the summer. No problems as long as I look after myself.

Thanks for the replies Guys it is encouraging that there is a route back (forgive the pun) to playing.

Get yourself one of those rubber yokes for the top of your putter, saves you picking the ball out of the hole.

My mate with a bad back uses one when is playing up.

I had a bulging l4/l5 disc for about 7 years before i eventually went under the knife. Got used to walking with a limp n standing kinda sideways.

I was playing ball as well as golf at the time and found that i wasn't too bad pain-wise while active, it was afterwards i was in agony.

Tried everything n handed out a fair few quid to osteopaths, chiropractors and physios but none of it worked.

Had the operation 6 years ago and ive been 100% brand new since. Was off work for a few months after it but if id known i would feel like this after, i would have made the decision years ago.

Best of luck whatever you do.

I had the same op on my back about 3 years ago and I am back playing a few rounds. It really depends on what your Doc says and also the fact have you to do the exercises that you are instructed to do when you suppose to do them. I had mine done in the Sports Surgery Clinic and it was not cheep not that I cared as it was the only time I was glad I had kept up the health insurance. But to be honest in the long term it was the best course of action for me. You need to talk to your GP and decide what is best for you everyone differs when it comes to back injuries and when if you do get surgery then after it and you have recovered keep moving. Either way wish you all the best and hope you find relief sooner then later.

    Ps
The surgery did not improve my game at all still hitting the ball as badly as ever for those that know me just thought I say it before you lot do ..
