    Hi everybody,

went to do the NCT yesterday and failed on 1 item, The emissions test, becasue they could not preform it.
The cars runs perfect, but only discovered when they NCT guy wanted to rev it up for emissions, the car would not rev past 2500 RPM, and therefore couldnt do the test.

The car revs past 2500 no problem when driving but when stationary it will not pass 2500 RPM,
Anybody got an idea why this would be?

I tried getting the revs past 2500 when stationary with handbrake on and off, clutch pressed and depressed, and using foot brake with left foot and still nothing.

Seems a really weird one to me

    thanks for your help

    What year/car is it?

Has it always been like this? I would wonder if there's a rev limiter when stationary....

I think all new vw group engines are like this.

out of interest which dipstick came up with this test ?

what is the point of revving an engine under no load to the limiter anyway ?

it won't be sucking anywhere near its max fuel

what is it supposed to be testing ?

    Turn the ESP off.

    Thanks for replies,
It's 2002 polo 1.4 tdi , I have read about this limiters online and would make sence but how did it pass the previous nct's? I only have the car since August. As I said it revs perfect and very smooth when driving.
There is no ESP on this model, it would have a disable button on the dash? My Da's Octavia and brothers Touran have ESP buttons

Problem solved, it's normal as for it's a uk import, got it certified by 3 different mechanics and VW in Northern Ireland, so the NCT as per their rules must test it to the limiter cut off rpm. It's in their manual also, so they made a mistake failing me on this item. (I had a small brake imbalance too)

Had a '10 superb and it was the same.
Standard across all VAG group for years, you'd think the NCT eejits would be aware of it by now.

They are unreal! I never had a vw before so I wasn't aware if it, but the NCT see them often enough and still didn't know what to do, and me thinking something was wrong with the car.

It's a bit much that nct transfers the burden on to owner to resolve technical issues.

Had a Jeep grand cherokee it past test but wouldn't give me cert because they couldn't find VIN. Not like it was import or first time being NCT it was late on Saturday they suggested that I ask main dealer on Monday.

I hadn't the time so sat in car park and went online
After I contact a jeep forum in US to have a guy in UK tell me it was in boot beside spare wheel

they came out inspected it and gave me cert and asked me to remember where it is for future tests

but why don't the maintain their own database it's not like it's one of a kind

Limiters when stationary is very common on diesels.

There probably should be a marque-model -type, trouble shooting web page for the NCT guys-that they can add to -

As it's "drive by wire" this will happen.

AFAIK if you hit the brakes while reving the car it will also cut the revs

    Update:

    Nct retest today:
Car didn't rev as explained in OP, explained to the NCT guy that there is a limiter on it, he said he will know with the data in the computer in the NCT centre.
Nct told me that my car should be reving to 4,700rpm.
Showed him my enquiry I send to VW in Northern Ireland (car was imported from Belfast) that confirmed that the car has a limiter.
NCT guys said a 2002 car shouldn't have it and other VW polo imports from the UK of 2010 or newer rev up no problem. They claimed they did one today too!

The car is 100% perfect other than this

Honestly, I think VW NI are wrong on this.
I think they brought that in much later than 02

I have a 2001 6n2 polo with the amf 1.4tdi the engine and it revs anyway anytime.
This may be standard but it's a first for me

Mine is a Uk Import I imported it myself.
I would start trawling the vw audi forums if I were you(the English ones)
There is a man who goes by the signature of Crasher on a vwaudi forum who is definitely a mechanic and whose knowledge in my opinion is paramount, you should try asking him,
    Regards Paul
