What kind of driving to you have to do? Town / motorway? Mileage estimate? You won't save money paying extra for a post 2008 car just because it's "cheaper tax". It's actually a great time to buy a petrol with the cost of fuel.

I know 08 cars are going on 7 years, but €5k doesn't seem enough to me to get anything but the worst examples.

Good luck trying to find a decent post 2008 diesel for 5k euro. Neither the 1.6tdci focus or the 1.5 dci Megane aren't exactly the most reliable they are very hit and miss but you can be lucky and I've had both so I'm talking from experience. Good diesel that size would be an astra, i30, ceed, golf but trying to get decent examples of any of them post 2008 for 5k wouldn't be too easy. And any that are will be seriously high mileage which wouldn't be ideal for reliability.

I'd steer clear of the Meganes. No personal experience with them, but have 3 friends with them, and car is not reliable at all for them.

Then again, i avoid french cars altogether, as a general rule. Maybe biased? :)

Will be very tough buying a post 2008 diesel for 5k. do you have a car to trade against it or anything?

Any 08 or newer diesel car for €5k will be well jaded or a dog at this stage. My recommendation is to save up a bit more to increase your budget or else forget about the cheap tax and look at something slightly older that isn't on it's last legs. Cars that are cheap to tax tend to cost more to buy.
