Im looking to get a cast iron bath redone, I want to get it completely stripped and reglazed, has anyone one gotten this done before and was it successfull or a disaster, is it expensive/ worth the hassle,
If anyone could point me in the right direction it be appreciated

I'm open to correction but would be confident that you can't actually remove the original glaze. It would be impervious to any chemical or physical attempt to shift it.

What's done by way of restoration is, in effect, a paint job - applied over the existing glaze.

It won't be a furnace-fire coating like the original (which is nigh on bullet proof), rather, it'll be some or other tough synthetic product painted on over the original.

How long you get from such a job is open to question: I've seen a few jobs done that have let go (chipped, peeling) after a few years. A bit of research and some solid recommendations required.

As far as I'm aware there's people who sand the bath tub (or dip in chemicals) and bring it back to bare metal and recoat the bath from scratch,
    I'll have to keep searching
    Thanks

i got mine done, down to bare steel then re enamelled, but, had to send to england to get done. When i got this done (2010) nobody on the island of ireland could do it.

Parents got it done a few yrs ago, think bath was brought to somewhere in Wexford to get it "properly done" as the new cast iron baths are a different size, didn't last, now going to re-do bathroom to accommodate a new cast iron bath.

I think some company in Tipperary were doing it too, possibly someone that reconditions old Aga cookers. I cant find anything on it now. Those types of companys might be a good place to look though, as they re enamel the old cookers.

I have been on several jobs where they got an old free standing cast iron bath re-enameled in position in the bathroom. Came out looking perfect afterwards, the guy doing it was a real perfectionist and very experienced.
