Well with only a few days since this was announced EMC have already put forward plans to setup a world class data center . Jobs will be a plenty down here in cork as this solution is due to go live by next summer. This medium can transfer data 5 milliseconds faster than the current transatlantic link and will see a lot more cloud providers situate in Cork.

Vroom Vroom Tier one enroute !!.

Things are heating up in Ireland for the cloud .

Additional link diversity is what we needed after the last two submarine failures. This is good stuff. With last mile access rolling out so quickly it'll be needed too.

I can see four major players setting up Data-centers in the Cork region on the back of this announcement . Some may say its just pandering for votes before an election only i look at the raw performance of this and see that it now opens the door for tier one business's to situate in cork - we as a county are now viable in world leading data center latency times and throughput's , ..... but for how long !!!

The fact that its in cork doesnt matter hugely TBH. If they need interconnectivity its already there in Waterford and Wexford and getting bandwidth in between the two is childs play compared to the submarine stuff.

Same with Enda's mad fibre run up Mayo with Shell, looks good in the paper.

Yeah its going to benefit all of Ireland I'm not saying Cork are the only beneficiaries, Still its nice to see that the fastest link will terminate here . (For now)

Indeed. Many of the UK's undersea links come ashore in some seriously out of the way places in south west England, many being the self same places the old undersea telegraph cables came ashore in the late 19th - early 20th century. See http://www.porthcurno.org.uk/index.php for example. It's undersea geography that's important, i.e. no steep drops or rocky outcrops for the cables to get snagged on, or areas where ships frequently moor, and not immediate proximity to major users.

Most of our national fiber links on most isp's terminate or "Route" to the UK anyway. I remember the aorta net did and many others over the years running trace routes and so on ...

I do not know if its related but most of my colleagues in the IT sector based in cork , including myself have been inundated with job approaches over xmas in the cork region ??? ( Being contacted over 26th 27th right the way through to the new year ) Something is definitely taking off down here .
