We live in rural cavan, about 2-3 milesfrom our local exchange. Wehave Eircom broadband, whichis prettyslow maybe 1Mb. I was wondering about Digiweb or Sky. No one will give me a real idea of likely speeds, merely telling me it will be up to 6, 7 or even 8 Mbs. Can anyone tell me if there is likely to bemuch of a difference considering the distance to the exchange and the fact that we dont have fibre, just a copper wire
In other words if we change, will we still end up with the same performance?

Do you know how to access your router and post your line stats?

    Changing providers wont help.

Your best bet is to try and make sure you're getting the most you can from the line. Make sure the modem is at the master socket, phones are filtered, no faulty devices, no line faults etc.

sky or voderphone will double your speed, compared to eircom

eircom just wants to get more money to improve the speed, watch out for eircom 30 written cancellation policy

someone wrote they don't have it,but I would check

I know some one with sky and they like it,but I am sure after a year they will double the price

If the state of the copper is anything like it is in the my rural area then changing providers won't improve the line.

I use fixed wireless as my line struggled with 16k on dial up, broadband was never an option.

How does it double your speed? and if so, how can you be sure it will work anywhere else?
if someone brought a sky router up to the house, would it be ossibloe to check it out do you think ?

That's pure nonsense. You will get the same with sky or Vodafone. Go to eircom.net and try order fibre broadband, when you enter the phone number it will say it's unavailable and there will be a link to check the max speed on your line, click that to see what it is.

I was with eircom getting about 17mb/s and I get the same with Vodafone.

Have you looked at other options, like FWA or mobile?

I can't get fixed broadband in my area, but can get 4G that provides up to 45mbps speeds and is very consistent with low pings... and I'm living here in the countryside.

You'll just get exactly the same product from any other ADSL provider.

FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) is your best best. You'll have to find an alternative to DSL

Your line may be a lot longer than you think too. They follow roads and may not take the most direct route sometimes.

It's crazy that people actually believe this marketing crap, they sell over Eircom copper lines, you will get exactly the same max attainable, if they give you faster speeds it's at the expense of more errors to correct and more packets to resend
